I know its bad....:look: but my hair has ALWAYS been able to withstand daily heat, even when I was relaxed. When I wash, it bounces right back to my crazy 3c curls (which don't look right until my hair is at least SL straightened)... I do this because my hair is just evening out and brushing the base of my neck again (cut my hair into a Victoria Beckham style bob a while ago). Does anyone else do this?

Not many ladies here use heat everyday. If your hair can take it, then you are lucky! I think that you may be able to grow your hair long with heat if you are careful, but it might not be as healthy as it could be.

Personally, for me, avoiding direct heat unless absolutely nessasary has tremendously improved its health.

Yeah, I've been on this board for about 4 years (before the subscription cost anything) but I stopped posting after it changed. My hair was long for-EVER, this is the first time I've had short hair. I know it CAN grow with freakish amounts of heat, but for me, its too much of a hassle. I do it because I can't go outside with my hair sticking up curly, LOL. But once it gets long enough (I can't wait), I'll stop and be my old lazy self again.

My name is tocthesunrise and I bump daily.

I know, I know it is terrible for my hair. I didn't start doing it until I cut my hair short. Before that I would roller wrap. Now its in a bob and I bump it every morning. I'm currently experimenting with different rollers but....we'll see. My hair is doing okay but I know it won't continue to do so should I continue my ugly habit. :ohwell:

I just use LOTS of heat protectant. LOL. I mean, it still grows. But I know I still shouldn't be frying it. It just doesn't lay right at this length without the heat. I would stop when its no longer necessary to do so.

Me! I flat iron everyday. But I don't feel bad about it because I wash everyday. And I don't feel bad about that because I run everyday (well, every weekday) and I guess the running opens my pores and my natural oils get going, and all that sweat must be moisturizing too. That's my personal theory anyway, I don't know how accurate it is. :lachen:

Sometimes I feel like the only black girl on the planet who doesn't have dry hair. IDK, maybe it's dry but I just don't know it. But, I've always used a lot of heat on my hair and I've never had trouble growing it.

I think that with heat it has to be used on clean hair, and you have to use the lowest temp on the flat iron that will get the job done.

And I just don't understand how a standing dryer is indirect heat and safe, but a blow dryer is direct heat and unsafe. I mean they both blow hot air, but with a blow dryer it's over in 15 mins, but a rollerset lasts an hour or more.

But, so many people on this site have had success with it, so I can't argue with that. My favorite thing about this site is how everyone shares what works for them, and people just starting out have so many useful ideas to try that they know will give sucessful results. :yep:

I do!! My hair is pretty short right now and it's always been able to withstand heat pretty well so..yeah. But b/c I'm flat ironing my hair most every day, I wash and deep condition a lot more (2-3x per week) and always use heat protectant. My hair is soft with no breakage.

BTW...I'm a newbie. Hi ladies! :newbie:

Yes, I flat-iron my bangs everyday. That seems like they only part of my hair that won't break with continuous heat usage.

I don't, and I won't. :nono:

And I can't. :look: I use heat once a week and it is too much. I know it is too much and I am a protein conditioning, henna, tie it up every night, do everything I can to prevent that freaking once a week flatiron from killing my hair sooner than it has to chick.

That once a week is bad enough.

You aren't. Not all of us have dry hair. I think my hair has the tendency to be dry because I relax it, but we all know that relaxed hair and curly hair has special needs to replenish it. I think some black women skimp on that step.

I think its the way the dryer transfers the heat to the hair. Much like a warm plastic comb on a blow dryer will barely do anything (heat transfer/straightening) compared to a hot comb (even if the plastic comb could reach the same temperature without melting). But either way, my hair reacts the same. LOL. I could wash my hair and blow dry every day, and my hair won't freak out. I used to do it. So.... I guess I will just keep doing what I do if it works for me! Until I can get lazy again.

If you've been able to grow your hair in the past with heat then it shouldn't be a problem now. But, if you've never had long hair it might be a good idea to note the length of your hair now, and check it again in two months. If there hasn't been any progress, it won't hurt to try a heat free regimen and see if that's the problem.

Even though I don't think that there's anything wrong with using heat, I sometimes feel guilty recommending it because it WILL cause breakage if it's not used properly. I look at like it like being able to play an instrument: Once you know how to play it's easy, but learning how you can have a lot of missteps. So if you're not sure how to do it, or are just starting out, a heat free regimen might be a good idea.

When I had relaxed hair, I used to bump my ends with a curling iron pretty much daily. The only products I used back then was shampoo and grease. My hair still retained length.
