I have a significant amount of new groth in 6 weeks (about an inch plus.) the quality of my hair feels much different than my regular natural hair(my hair is natural not relaxed or texturized) . The new groth feels hard and stiff. I use jojoba oil because i think that the hair is dry. It does not look dry but it feels hard. I have been taking biotin and other vitamins. Does this mean that the vitamins thicken the hair or make the texture thicker? I am not quite sure of whats happening. Its not a bad thing but it is something i am not used to.

My newgrowth comes in more thicker and a bit harder than before I started my thryoid meds. And it doesn't take to perms very well anymore either.

But one time, my hair was almost as hard as rock because I apparently used too much protein....

I take it you mean the hair is thicker and not hard and brittle? Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) I believe thickens hair. If it was hard and brittle, I'd say you need a deep penetrating moisturizing conditioner more often and less protein conditioning. A lot of people swear by Keracare Humecto for natural hair (I'm assuming it's a moisturizing conditioner and not a protein one). Methinks that because your hair is thicker, you need to help products get INSIDE the hair shaft with a bit of heat. Maybe you could put on a plastic cap and go under a drying or just sit out in the sun? And not just with rinse-out conditioner but your leave-in as well. Just a thought.

[EDIT: I'd also like to say that perhaps the hair you are seeing now is the way your hair is supposed to be strong, thick and healthy. Remember your usual hair has been out there for a while. And you probably didn't do enough for it like you have done for the new baby hair.]

I've had hard hair before! When I was taking Biotin supplements, I experienced this. I no longer take Biotin supplements (it's in my One A Day) and since then, the texture of my new growth has changed for the BETTER! I take an EFA supplement and I believe this supplements has made a difference in my new growth. It comes in very soft now!

so now does conditioners help it or does evening primose oil vitamin help?

I think deep conditioning with heat (plastic cap under medium heat dryer, or sun) and also leave-in moisturizer treated the same way (apply to roots and wear a plastic cap) might help moisture to penetrate your roots and soften them. Also from the inside out, Flaxseed or Evening Primrose Oil or any GLA (gamma lineolic acid) supplement might help make your hair begin to grow softer and give it a healthy look.

Here's a link to a brief explanation on vitamins and hair .

I noticed when I dropped the EPO my new growth got harder.... when I picked it up again... it got softer. I would recommend trying it. The first EPO that I tried came from 500 mg. The new stuff I am taking is by NOW... and it does ok... but not as good.

You could moisturize all that new growth with castor oil -- it will definitely help. Now I heard MSM makes new growth come in softer also.

it could be you vitamins. Centrum has biotin in it, and you're taking a biotin supplement in addition to it. You may be taking to much of it.
