I saw this kit by African Pride for self highlightin. It contained everything that beauty shops have. The only thing that prevented me from getting it were the color choices:nono: This got me to thinking,though...I can prolly go to Sally's, purchase the needle and the cap and do it myself!! The only thing is it seems simple, but hair color, especially liquid hair color can be a mess. It would save me a little money vs me going to a shop though. Has anyone ever done this with success?

Well kinda, I had some twist in my hair and I undid a few twist and applied some color where I wanted it...it WORKED TOO gave me chunky highlights. Pics in my hair "Color Me" from last year.

yeah ive used the streaking kit by african pride i think twice...the first time i let my friend do it for me...i love streaks...but i think i went one time too blond with the streaks and u have to be careful with this especially with any color because your hair needs extra conditioning after it...i think some of my hair kind of broke off...i think ive tried it with a rinse before...just got a streaking cap and the tool to pull the hair thru..pulled and selected all the hair i wanted out..and just used the rinse instead...i think thats more safer than using the actual kits because of the amonia and peroxide in them...

I don't know anything about the African Pride kit, but I would suggest that you speak to Kitchen, she did her highlights herself. You have beautiful hair, can't wait to see the lighlights. Wishing you the best.

I love the African Pride kit. The gold is truly the color on the box. The first time I did, there was a lot of breakage due to my personal hair practices. Then, I found the board and did the kit again. It was great. I have had friends go to the salon to get that gold color and others can't tell the difference. It's like that Suave ad! The kit is not really a liquid because once it's mixed, it is more of a paste. I wouldn't do it by myself. I always get help pulling it through, especially in the back. Fifteen minutes later, very pretty highlights. Then, the battle for constant moisture begins.

Hey BBS, I got your pm, but I just posted here.

Let's see, most recently I had my hair professionally highlighted in a salon, but prior to that, I've done "home-made highlights". I did my last "homemade" highlights Aug '04.

Actually, I prefer to highlight my hair with "color" and not "highlighting kits" which have lots of bleach. "Color" tends to give a subtle effect that works well for me. I just colored the top portion, so when it's down, it gives the appearance of more color coverage, without all the color. I used Texture n Tones in Bronze and I highlighted only the top portion of my hair in sections.

I parted my hair from ear to ear and put the back portion in ponytail. Then divided the top in bantu knots. I put the hair I didn't want to color in small bantu knots and left the other portions out, that I wanted to color.

It's actually easier to use a streaking cap, but I'm soooo tender headed and I have too much hair to pull through the cap. I've seen "kits" in Walmart that include highlighting cap, brush and the needle for about $2.

I've never used African Pride, so I don't know about the quality of it. I've used other "home" highlighting kits and they were too harsh. I think they have too much bleach in them for me. It just depends on what kind of look/effect your going for.

I left the TNT on longer than the recommended time, with no ill effects, but I've been doing this for years, so I was comfortable with it.

BBS, Your hair is gorgeous! :yep: Keep us posted on your results!

I want to do this, so this is funny that you posted this topic.

Kitchen, I was in your album today, showing my co-worker like, "See, that's what I want!" Your instructions in your album are great! I'm going to try this after my next relaxer. Quick question though: Did you do straight sections or something like a checkerboard pattern?

Thanks Baglady! I did straight sections, going straight back. Kind of like I was going to do cornrows, going straight back. I alternated coloring each section. I hope this helps.

In my past life as a relaxed head the foil method with regular ole' color ( Clairol /flaxen blonde) and heat from a hood dryer gave nice results. This was done at the salon.
I think I will try that method again.....But fo shure I am trying to steer clear of bleach! way too much breakage !!!!

Oh, girl, I won't  When I saw those bleach blonde colors, I was like Nah ah. Besides I purchased some Dark and Lovely hair color already:yep: Here's the one I have

Since I have dark hair, I thought this color would look decent and give me the paper sack brown color that I want.

Girl , I had this color only because this girl I know was gonna do it for me,but when I saw how orangey her head was, I said 'that's okay'

I used this brand before about 2 years ago and my hair with the color completly broke off. I think it was to strong for my hair. I dont recommend it.

Yeah , those blondes that are orangey are not cute .

Been there...Done that....almost 4 years ago, I had my best friend do it and I did hers...I looked really cool, but along came the breakage. Ohh boy, did my hair break off. I have very thick hair so it came as a surpise that my hair
was starting to thin. I was not pretty.
