Yes, this newbie needs help again. I see so many ladies on this site that do their own hair and it looks great, why can't that be me?:look:

I am a reformed style-a-holic (twice a week visits to the salon), in a quest for healthy hair, and every time I try a style on my own, it looks terrible. I read the tutorials, attempt to duplicate and always end up with a hot mess. Now I remember why I paid the salon to do it. Unfortunately, they could not get my hair to grow.

Am I just suffering from stylist withdrawl?

I feel the same way. I just did my first rollerset last night and I look like a throwback from the 50's:). I dont know how long its going to take before i get good at this hair care stuff. i feel like i'm roaming around in the dark, and i keep banging into walls:mad:

I used to be able to style my hair when I was in grade school. After years and years of laziness and just not caring I can't do much to my hair! I put it in a bun and go. But, I'm sick of the bun! I would love to do the protective styles! So, I guess I will have to get to practicing? Don't they say Practice makes perfect? Hmmm they better be right:lol:!

I'm not good at styling my own hair and need to remove box braids after 6 weeks. My last relaxer was in April. This is going to be a project. Who will win:my blow-dyer or my 4A/Bhair?

I can not style my hair to save my life. After I wash it, I can never get it to be straight like if i go to the salon and if i try to style it myself, it always looks like a puff ball. If I wash my hair and then wrap it, it looks like puffy and there is no bend at my ends.

I feel the same way. I feel that if my hair was longer and all one length (its in some very interesting layers) I would be able to style it but until then I cant.....

I am style challenge, too. I just keep trying different styles until I get them right. I figure practice makes perfect.

Wow lol I'm not alone. Good to know!! The only thing I can do well is an afro-puff. I tried bantu-knots once.. it looked like a jerry curl.. I just ended up putting it in a ponytail. Braidout was a disaster.. never again. My twistouts are getting better... slooooooowly.. but surely. My hair has different textures, so part of it still look like an afro, while the rest is nice and wavy.

It's so frustrating!!

Yes ladies some of us are really challenged in this area but I can truly say practice practice practice and you'll get results. When joined this site in feb. I could not rollerset to save my life. At first it took 45 mins to and hour now I'm down to 20 mins and have been experimenting with rods, mesh rollers, satin covered you name it and i've got it down pack now. Grant it there are alot of styles out there I still can't do but if you keep at it you'll get it.

I'm one of those helpless people who can do much of anything to their own hair. What I CAN do isn't all that thrilling: shampoo, deep conditioner and ponytail (after taking rollers out). That's just about it. I go to my hairdresser as often as I can afford it because she's really good and she's always done right by me as long as i've been going to her (1990).

I cannot style my hair for nothing. That's why it's always down and straight. I can't even count the number of burns from curlers or misshaps with rollersets I've had. I just got a handle on wrapping decently and I've been trying for years.

Another style-challenged chica checking in...

Fortunately, I'm not big on hair "styles"...I like to keep it simple so I've managed to perfect most of the looks I like.

I don't know how to style either. The only thing I've been able to manage is doing my hair in 'knots' at night and unraveling them in the morning. It gives me curly hair that I just finger comb til it looks good. That's how I wear it to work. Very easy to take care of.

Ladies, practice DOES make perfect! Please don't give up. I remember the first "wrap" I tried in 10th grade. It was a hot mess. I didn't wrap my hair the right way, and my roots became all wavy and stuff. Needless to say, my hair looked a HOT mess  and I didn't know what to do with it, so I wore it to school, lol. No one really commented on it though...maybe because they knew it'd hurt my feelings. Ah well, fast forward about 5 years and here I am now. I now know how to wrap my hair the right way and have it come out right. I really don't remember my first rollerset, but I know that overtime, that's something that I really came to enjoy and like doing for my hair. Ladies, don't give up.

Let me suggest something for those of you who want to try a rollerset. Don't jump off into using the magnetic rollers with the clips; it might get too confusing for you. Start off with the magnetic snap-on rollers (I used some in my fotki). Those are a bit easier to use and will get you started with practicing your rollersets. You can master making the right sized parts, direction of the roller (that's up to you, I guess), etc. After you get all of that down pat, then you could try regular magnetic rollers with the clips. When I started practicing with clips, I just used my same snap-on magnetic rollers but replaced the snap-on with the clips. HTH.

You have to crawl before you can walk. Don't feel bad, I'm also learning how to style my hair. These days I'm learning how to do braidouts now (Not that I'm any good or anything but, they're coming along).

Sometimes they even come out cute!

My suggestion is to start with a simple style (just one) and perfect it, then go on to something a little more difficult.

I still can't do rollersets very well to save my life, but I'll get to to working on those when I learn to do braidouts to my satisfaction.

I just learned how to perfect my carouso roller sets..they use to come out all soggy and stuff but now I got the hang of it and produced nice outcomes..When I use to curl my hair back in the day...I use to always part my hair slightly to the side and stick one of those little clips to pull it back because if I did not put the clip in I would kind of look like plain...but now I part my hair so my bang will fall in my face and when I curl it...my hair comes turns out pretty...it turns out like the way Aaliyah wore her hair with her bang in her face....I just learned that recently....but I think when my hair gets longer...I will be able to do more flexible and creative hair styles....I still cannot do a wrap to save my life...the top part comes out all puffy...I think that is one style that I will never be able to do...heck...I have been trying to wrap since my teenage years and shoot...I'm 21...I mean 31 now...

I use the snap on magnetics but have started needing to use bobby pins to hold it tight. I suppose I will graduate to clips in no time!
