Anyone consider switching from Affirm to another brand of relaxer?

Just wondering if anyone isn't happy with the results they get from Affirm or have recently gotten disillusioned by it. Especially the original Lye formula.
Thanks in advance for any responses.

My next relaxer will be a Soft and Beautiful no lye. I have used the Affirm lye twice and my hair was not nearly as straight as I would have liked it to be. I like the shampoo and 5 n 1 reconstructor, but the relaxer has been a BIG disappointment. /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

I remember when I used to use no-lye relaxers my hair would be bone straight and my scalp wouldn't burn at all. Now that I changed to Affirm I notice that it doesn't get as straight(which is what I want)and I have to spike it so that my scalp can take it. I wouldn't have it any other way, though. I love my affirm. my hair has never been so healthy.

I agree. I have used Affirm mild twice and It did not get my hair straight enough. I have used Vitale Regular in the past and was pleased. I think I am going to try the Vitale Mo Body. It a lye relaxer in a box but I was reading the ingredients the other day and Sodium Hydroxide is one of the last ingredients along with some natural herbal ingredients.

I like Affirm mild. It gets my hair about 75% straight and that's how I like it. Depends what you're going for...if youwant it straighter maybe use the regular. I'm going to stick with it...

I'm considering switching right now. The Affirm is just not getting my hair as straight as I would like it. I think I'm going to use the half and half relaxing method next time, to allow myself more smoothing time. If that doesn't work, I think I'm going to switch to the Revlon Realistic. A lot of people seem to have good results with that relaxer.

i switched from affirm/dudleys to phytorelaxer in april of this year.....it is 100% free of lye......no burning, itchy scalp, no excessive shedding...and my hair has more body, softness, and moisture....phytorelaxer is my holy grail for relaxers.... /images/graemlins/up.gif /images/graemlins/up.gifi will never go back to affirm or dudleys....

I was using Affirm, but I ended up switching when I ran out and was due for a touch-up but couldn't afford to order anymore for awhile. My mom's stylist had already switched her to Vitale and she mentioned it to me. I tried it and the results were just as good if not better. I like that the Vitale Mo'Body is easier to get my hands on and everything that I need is in one box for less than $7. That leaves me with more money to buy conditioners - which are my real weakness. The only downside to Vitale Mo'Body is that it comes in regular strength only. I would prefer a mild version so that the hair would process slower.

I am not necessarily unhappy with Affirm but I want to try the Phytorelaxer. Are there any stylist that use this relaxer in their salon in New York?

not that i know of... i buy my own and have my stylist apply it to my hair...she takes $20 off of the price she would normally charge for a relaxer...

Sherry, it's a no lye relaxer?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes... i usually do not like to say "no lye" because "no lye" is generally used to describe relaxers that contain a small amount of lye....that's why i describe phytorelaxer as 100% free of lye because it contains no lye whatsoever... /images/graemlins/up.gif

So which chemical is used in straightening your hair? If it's not LiOH, CaOH, or NaOH then what does it use? Hmmm! And how straight does it get your hair? How long do you leave it in for?

I'm considering switching to Arosci or something else at my next touch up, my hair is different textures and causes breakage now since I started using Affirm exclusively.

BTW, has anyone used both Affirm and Arosci, how do they compare?

guanidine carbonate (a caustic chemical) and egg soya are the active ingredients....visit this link: www.alesgroup.com/ phyto_products_specific3.htm

It says it's non chemical but that's not so true is it? Which index do you use? I use Affirm mild for 10-13 miutes..which would you think I would need?

exactly, because guanidine carbonate is an alkali chemical; but it is no where near as caustic as lye.......i use phytorelaxer index 2 which would be fine for your hair as well....

I took Chemistry in college awhile back, so what does all this mean? /images/graemlins/look.gif

Sherry do you know what the pH is? I'm thinking it's better to have a relaxer with a pH closer to hair's pH right? Lower the ph the more alkali correct? Or is it the other way? Haven't studied chem in about 13 years...lol.
Nice I think it all means that it straightens but i's not as harsh as other relaxers.

And that's all that matters...
Last question...how big a bottle of neutralizer do they sell? I like a lot of that...lol

Most definitely! I switched to Straight Request when I switched stylist. She didn't use any Affirm products which was a shocker to me, because thats all they use on your hair when you go get it done around here. I could already tell a difference when Kameka (my hair stylist) was smoothing/combing it through before washing it out. The fine tooth comb slide through my nappy, thick, dirty, relaxed hair with ease. No snaggling or anything. Also, my scalp felt great. My relaxer lasted me longer than what my affirm relaxer would have lasted me. I even stretched my relaxer out and my newgrowth was really soft and my edges weren't as raggedy. It got my hair straight without harshness. I have been using Straight Request since August and I am shocked that as great as a relaxer it is, none of you ladies have heard of it. My stylist also told me today that it is less harsh on your hair. Try it!

Has anyone tried Paul Mitchell? I have used this for my last three touch-ups and my hair feels DELICIOUS. This has got to be the best relaxer I have used..

Dina is the PM lye or no lye? Links?
shellzfroshizzle, is Straight Request lye or not lye? Links?

Thanks:)

the bottle is kind of small, but it is enough for two good washes.....

Thanks Sherry. Maybe I'll skip it. I know I need a BIG OLD bottle of neutralizer since I like to wash with it again 3 days after.

I am looking for a new relaxer. I take it that the regular Affirm lye is not much better than the Fiberguard? I might try the Vitale, PhytoSpecific, or Paul Mitchell. I need more input. Keep the replies coming!
