If so, how did you get them other than using heat and not wearing protective styles?

I'm still trying to figure it out. I was making good progress for a while, next thing you know I've been sidelined with these crazy splits. I think, but I'm not sure, that it may be the hair I used for my braids.

For me i noticed that the parts of my hair that had spilts (end & middle) happened when I was severely anemic. When I found out about my iron deficency, I've been treating it with tablets that i take daily. My Family doctor says that the hair is definately weaker and will have to grow out to see improvement, so I feel like I'm transitioning again....

When my hair was relaxed, I used to have quite a bit of split ends and middles despite my regular self-trims and very little heat usage. Since my hair has become natural, I don't see anymore split middles and very few split ends. So for me, they were likely caused by relaxers and the minimal heat I used.

I have had both split ends and middles. I rarely use heat so I know it wasn't that. I never wear protective styles but I don't think that was it. I am convinced that it was from combing. I comb my hair like every hour. I really need to stop. I just can't help it :ohwell:.

Haha, me too...well maybe not every hour!

Color!

I'm growing out the last bit of color on my natural hair and I'm finding preforated ends: basically holes. . .not full splits. However, this is only on the colored areas. Funny as bad as I know color can be, I was tempted to color again until I saw those ends.

Thanks for the responses, ladies. I'm transitioning. I think mine may come from breaking and maybe combing with a rat tail comb.

i definitely have split middles and ends. i think they come from not moisturizing enough and maybe pressing my hair also.

i have 'em both and was wondering the same thing as to WHY OH WHY! I don't get trims often, since I've been self relaxing and washing. I'm planning on getting my hair cut sometime this week if the lady ever shows up for work early enough for me to get in and out in time to go to work. I've also slacked on deep cond's too. I'm just now trying to get it together on keeping the hair and ends moisturized daily, so that I can get more growth and some healthy ends.

zoj2,

I just checked out your album and I'm loving the thickness of your hair. I feel you about your younger sister being your inspiration. It was the same thing for me when I had a relaxer and my little cousin had hair that was longer than mine and thick (she had a relaxer put in a few months prior). But oh, have the tables turned. The relaxer is making her hair shed like crazy and her hair dropped like mine did with my first relaxer. She's trying to be like me now. My hair looks just like your sister's. From August to November I had been spraying Cathy Howse's Dew on my hair followed by her creme moisterizer. Now I use water mixed with oil (any oil that doesn't have petroleum or mineral oil) on my hair and the ends followed with BB Oil Moisterizer (okay, this does have mineral oil but they changed the formula...it's not listed on the first line, though) on the hair and especially the ends. I don't know why I didn't use my head and took care of my ends (and such a simple thing to do, too). I don't remember being this happy with my hair.

To everybody: You can do it. Keep doing what you're doing and you'll be where you want to be hair-wise.:D

It also may have alot to do with the comb you are using. If your comb has seams down the teeth which many do, it may be shredding your hair with every pass through. Those seams can rough up, scratch, and tear your cuticle every time you comb. Try filing down the seams on the teeth if you aren't using a seamless comb. If you manually file the seams, place coating of clear polish over the filing to create a smoother surface. Or invest in a bone comb- they are made seamless.:)

all the time but it has reduced significantly as long as I keep my hair moist. The con of curly hair :ohwell:

Its the amount of combing

i have only a few splits when its dusting time.

oh also, forget putting bands on the end of plaits, and use clips to hold the hair

Wow, thanks for replying. The comb that I use does have seems. That could be the problem. I try to comb through my natural hair more than I should.

Ayeshia, your hair is so pretty in that picture. :)

How can you tell if you have split middles?

That's when a strand of hair looks like a toothpick that's been bent in half but not completely broken, so part of it is sticking out and detached, but part of it is still attached and hanging there. I hope that makes sense.

I agree. I bought this seamless comb last year from zooscape.com:

It's made of hard rubber. It glides through my hair more easily than the plastic comb I used to use, even though the plastic comb also had wide teeth. Moisturizing has also helped me to reduce the number of split ends & middles I get.
Check out this info. from http://www.hercules-saegemann.de/data/start/frame_e.htm that proves Sistaslick's point:

Thanks! It does make sense. I used to have them a few years back, but haven't seen any lately. (Runs to inspect hairs :look: )

I spotted a couple spilt middles on the front of my hair. I think it was from not wearing my protective styles in 3-4 months. I also think it could be from the way I was combing/detangling. And not enough moisture at times.

yeah- i get those. I'm natural and i wear my hair out daily in a curly fro. I moisturize daily, oil daily- shampoo/deep condition 1-2 times a week, cowash daily. I think it is just the nature of my hair type- my curlies love each other so much that they just have to hug each other.so i am going to get a half inch taken off today. Last trim was in december.

I'm using Bed Head Ego Boost for my split ends. I love it to death! It smells really good and keeps my ends nice and healthy. :yep:
