I want to start flat ironing once a week on wash day. I was wondering if they may be too much because I have fine strands. And what is the best heat protectant out there?

I see no harm just deep condition, deep condition, deep conditon. I also recommend Aphogee Green Tea and Keratin and Chi Iron Gurard. HHG!!

A weekly flat iron as a fine haired relaxed head may be a bit much. You may find more split/damaged ends and may have to trim as a result down the line. But this is jmho. If you choose to go this route, when u dc, make sure you are incorporating protien to keep your hair strong.

You really need to be up on your protein DC's if you are going to do this weekly and only flat iron on freshly washed hair. Sabino Moisture Block seems to be the big serum of choice on here.

This caused me to have a set back before i found out about LHCF. I was washing weekly, blow drying, and flat ironing my hair straight. My hair became see through thin and lifeless. I wouldn't suggest it, unless you air dry and then flat iron. and even then, since you relax, i wouldn't suggest it more than once or twice a month.

but if you do, do turn down the heat. us fine haird relaxed heads don't need anything higher than 325 on the length of their hair, in my opinion. :yep:

The best possible solution is no heat...of course. However, if you must use the flat iron, you can compromise and do so guiltfree...how you many ask?? :thought::thought::thought:

Do a roller set using large rollers and then flat iron your roots. You will get that sleek look that I assume your are looking for, that will actually last much longer because of the moisture retention from the rollerset.

Works like a charm!!:love2:

If I flat iron once a week, I make it a point to not blow dry my hair. I let it air dry then flat iron. I also step it up on the deep conditioning.

Before LHCF I was known to use a curling iron every day for weeks at a time - lawd what was I thinking! :nono::blush: Now my hair is much healthier the curling iron temptation is calling me again - it's evil I tell ya! :lachen:I know I can't do it, even weekly heat would lead me to breakage city! So I'm going to keep my busted looking pre -LHCF hair pic on my desktop, just to remind me in case it gets too much!

I wonder if you ladies have any suggestions for me. I roller set and flat roots once a week. I use CHI, then flat iron. When I go in the shower, or out on a slightly humid day, there goes all of my effort. So far it's okay, but my growth rate has been increasing lately. I'm scared. Lol.

I used to blow dry and flat iron my hair every week and even i did not had split ends or breackage, my hair looked like lifeless and dryer than ever. But i was pre LHCF in that time (didn't know anything about real hair care), maybe with DC and Moisturize your hair can handle it.

I use Chi the one in the red bottle to protect my hair from heat, and also i use the TRESemmé Thermal Recovery for straighten the hair and protect from heat as well.

I think it is too much, i was doing it, and i didn't make any progress. I never used a temp higher than 370, I used heat protectant and DCed, but it still did harm. After dropping down to flat ironing only once a month, i started to see progress.

In my opinion, part of the problem with weekly flat ironing, especially if you have fine hair is that you can't properly moisturize your hair while wearing it down. If you want to flatiron and wear it up, then i guess it doesn't matter too much.

Since the beginning of the year I've been airdrying after sealing with Argan oil and then flat ironing just the roots (on 320 or 340). Lately, I've been doing a silk wrap (with a cross wrap) and waiting until I see new growth to flat iron the roots.

I used to flat iron all of my hair and noticed that my ends were thinning. I haven't touched my ends with a flat iron all year and haven't felt the real need for a trim. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this works.

Also, I use Chi as a heat protectant.

I don't think I'm going to do it. I'll just continue to roller set and flatiron the roots. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I'm natural but when i was relaxed i used to flat iron waaay too often. There are ways you'll know if your hair needs moisture and protein. The general idea seems to be that if your hair is saturated with all the needed moisture it wont suck up a whole ton from the air and go limp. So if your porosity, moisture, and protein are right you wouldn't really need flat iron more than once per wash..session.. thingy. (sorry, I'm really sleepy right now)

Also I think people who relax (at least who bone lax) may have a tendency to overestimate how hot they need the iron to be. The higher quality the iron, the lower the heat. I remember getting results that I liked just fine in the lower two hundreds (while my roommate would push it up to the three hundreds). I honestly believe that with the right products and healthy hair, lower temperatures will work easily.

Oh, and probably no blowdrying. I don't think weekly heat and high retention are impossible.. but the requirements might be more trouble than they're necessarily worth, it seems.

Good info. I cowashed the other day and then flat ironed....Great results but I don't like all that heat. I like the idea that Reecie suggested.
