I'm off on holiday in Jamaica on April 26TH, next month and would appreciate some advice on how to wear my hair. My primary concerns are sun damage and minerals from the sea

. I was thinking of wearing cornrows or exstentions, and i received negative comments, regarding the heat and sweating I may encouter will make it itch and scratch a lot

. However i don't want to wear my hair out I aim to keep manipulation to an absoulute mininum, as wish to grow my hair back from the very short cut I had last week. What protectiv styles would be suitable for the weather? and What kind of product would be needed to maintain the health of my hair? How can i prevent build-up, should i bring a clarifying shampoo? Thanks in advance

Well, Den, I am from the Caribbean and I will tell you that while it may be hot, I would still go with the braids or cornrows. Braids are always my holiday hair stule of choice. You can always rinse or wash them out if you feel the itch. Braids are always the easiest to deal with on holidays especially when you don't what to be handling your hair all the time.

I spent a year in Jamaica a couple years ago. If not there i always the sewn in weave. How long will you be staying in Jamaica, if I dare ask?

Can I get in on this? I am going to Puerto Rico for a week in may and was wondering how good a weave might be for this trip, last year I had human hair braids and they were just wack! I don't want to do that again, some suggestions for me too!! Thanks!

About four weeks. Thanks, I may just go ahead with your suggestion.

Bump...

I have the same question because I'm going to the Bahamas late summer

I thought about braids too, but I'm too concerned about the build up. My plan right now is to keep my hair bunned up and do CO washes while I'm there. I think I'm just going to clarify when I get home

Any suggestions would be appreciated

For sun damage you can give John Frieda Life Preserver Oil a try.It smells great and is designed to prevent sun and chlorine damage.Use sparingly if you don't want sticky hair though.

Amber, you might try PMing Ebony. She wore a human hair weave to Puerto Rico (see her hair album) and it looked beautiful...she went swimming and all other sorts of activities and was quite happy with it. Although I think she only had one month left before she took it out. I don't know, you'll have to ask her.

HTH

Here are my suggestions:

individual braids with synthetic hair
braid outs
wash n go if you can do it
bun
phony pony

I think braids would be the easiest to maintain....as long as your bring along some leave in mosturizers and wash weekly. Take a straw hat along and you should be fine. There are also products for hair that have sunsreen in them.

Thanks for all the responses, ladies! The JF Life Preserver Oil sounds especially promising. I think I'm going to stick with my CO wash n go method, following up with the JF Life Preserver and just keep bunning it.

When my daughter was 10, I took her on vacation to Jamaica for a week, and she got human hair extensions... well, by the time that week was over, her head looked ATROCIOUS!! A lot of the braids came out, too!!

Of course, she was in the pool every day, so I guess that was to be expected...

If you plan on doing a lot of swimming, I'd stay away from the human hair!!

Braids in a warm climate can make you feel very hot and they may itch a good deal and if they're long, may be generally annoying, especially against your neck, in hot weather.

I would suggest that you clarify before you leave for your trip and when you get back home.

Bring a mild shampoo and plenty of conditioner as well as a good leave-in.

For styles, try something that won't touch your neck. This way, it won't feel bothersome and if you sweat, it won't mess up your hair.

Here are some styles you could do: http://www.dressytresses.com/hair-styles/default.asp

I'd do a bun or a twist up in the back w/ clip. Coat your hair in conditioner and a little sunscreen if you're worried about sun damage. Braids are a nice option too if your scalp responds well.

My preference is for the wash and go. I find it too humid in the Caribbean for my hair to "set" in braid-outs. Last trip, I used LUST as a leave-in. I also brought a phony-pony that I used a couple of times. For swimming, I put my hair in a bun.

I got a lot of helpful tips from a thread I started about swimming in the ocean... I'll find it and bump it up for you.

I don't like the way braids look on me, and found them itchy the one time I tried them in Mexico.

Good luck!
