Any idea why hair in middle is shorter than hair on the sides?

Exactly what the title says...I just washed and flat ironned my hair--my side hair is longer than my middle hair. Any daily practices or things might have caused them? I'm open to any ideas.

How do I edit the title? I mean hair in middle is *shorter

It could come from how you sleep at night. I have one side shorter than the other and ive noticed I that I rest my hand on my right side pretty much all day, so I think thats why my right side is shorter. So check your habits first and make sure you give your sides some TLC

Thanks! That is most likely. I don't sleep well because I usually sleep with my boyfriend at night, so I forgot to use satin pillows, scarves.... This is most likely the case. I'm going to have to pay attention to how I sleep from now on.

I have the same problem as you OP. My sides are 11", but my middle is only 6.5". I think it's because my crown is more of a dry 4c texture, which makes it much harder to retaiin length. Also, I almost went completely bald in that area about 4 years ago, due to relaxers and stress, so maybe my scalp is just taking it's time to heal.

My hair is the same way. It gets dryer in that area, so once I increased my deep conditioning (while taking my time to apply it to that area since it's so thick) it helped. Also, protective styling! Keeping the hair off my shirt and tucked away so it wouldn't dry out and break off helped. It's still shorter than the sides, but I'm actually retaining more.

Are you relaxed/texlaxed? I texlax and the sides process much easier, but the middle usually ends up looking more natural than texlaxed and therefore needs more attention since it's dryer. I also get the worst knots there.

I guess my advice would be to try to keep your hair off your shoulders as much as possible until it grows out more, deep condition more (if it's dry), and take your time time when applying products to that area. :)

@classoohfive, this was my problem too. The whole area from the crown to the nape was totally broke off looking and raggedy. Meanwhile, the side were flourishing. :nono: I couldn't figure it out. I started dc'ing more carefully and did a bc back to shoulder. I kept up the dc'ing and then started dusting every month. That was the beginning of this summer and I'm now approaching a nice, healthy APL for my first time ever. No raggedy pieces or see-through ends. I think I finally figured out my hair.

eta: AND I've been flat-ironing at least once a month for dusting. When I joined the board, I cut back on my heat usage big-time, from every other day to maybe once a quarter, but this reggie seems to be working. I'm retaining very well.

I have this problem too and I just hate that something always happens like this. When I was relaxed and wearng my hair down everyday my hair would break off in the back on the side because of my wraps. Now that I've transitioned and become natural My hair is feathering in the middle. It is thinner and see thru in the middle.

My suspicion is that my puffs caused this as my hair is actually the same texture there as everywhere else. With the puff (my staple once I BC'ed) I use a knee high, tied in the back (hence breakage when I pull it taught and up), This is the only thing that would explain it. I was doing a wash n go the other day and when I got to that section in the back the hairs were much shorter and I got sad :(. I've resolved to not wear puffs even though they are so damn cute and to baby my hair all around by pre-pooing and not using heat.

I forgot to mention that I also cut my hair! I started off with small trims but when I noticed that my ends were doing much better after each trim, I didn't care about length and ended up doing several small cuts. If the hair is damaged it will need to be cut or progress won't be made. :yep: My cut was also back to SL.
