Is it true that we should only wear our hair short b/c it is so fine and it won't look good long. I have fine hair and I want to grow it longer but I get so much negativity regarding my plans. Any ladies with fine hair have any tips for me. Any pics to share of your hair. Thanks

how fine is your hair? I have 2 friends with really fine 4a/3c hair one is relaxed the other isn't both have shoulder length hair one you can see the scalp the other you can see it peeking thru. I say work with/embrace what you have. If you want it long grow it long. You cant help having fine hair but you can make sure it is healthy.

I have fine hair, and I hated to wear it straight which is why I chose to get my texturized rather than relaxed, because then at least when it is curly I can give the illusion that I have thick hair. When my hair was straight I had to constantly look for volumizing products so that my hair can look thick. Anyhow, fine hair CAN look good long. My hair was long when it was relaxed and though it was fine, putting the right volumizing products made it look good. Don't worry about the negativity. You can do it, fine hair ladies just haveto pay a little extra attention to their hair that's all. Do your thang girlfriend!! /images/graemlins/wave.gif

My hair is fine. I will NOT wear it short. I've heard it said we should...but then - people say black women should wash their hair once a month too! /images/graemlins/nuts.gif /images/graemlins/smile.gif

P.S....I find all my fine hair needs to look good as it grows is a rollerset. When I wear one you would never guess my hair is fine and thin. I don't use anything to increase volume either. Just a leave in and some serum.

Meka,

I'm not trying to confuse the issue, but I find that a lot of people confuse fine hair with thin hair. Now I'm not saying that your hair is thin, but I know a lot of people don't properly differentiate between the two. My hair is fine, pertaining to the individual strands, but overall my hair is very thick, and I can pretty much wear it any way I want. So if your hair is actually thin as opposed to fine, sometimes it doesn't always look good when it's long and straight, but a nice bouncy rollerset would probably look really nice. /images/graemlins/up.gif

Meka,

I have fine 4b hair, and I'm trying to reach bra strap length by year's end. I got it from my father's side of the family. I'm dealing with the ramifications lately, so I have a bit to say.

-Because the strands are thin, there's not as much tensile strength as there would be if they were coarse. A strand of my fine hair snaps more easily if you pull on each end than a strand of my sister's coarse hair would.
-My hair is also easily weighed down/clumped together if I'm heavy handed with oils or creams.
-When I get a rollerset, the curls and body don't last longer than 2 days. Then my hair falls very flat. I kinda dig it, though.

Lately, my hair stylist recommended an acidifier for my hair to smooth the cuticle when I wash it in the shower. (This after a particularly difficult detangling session at the wash bowl.) Stylist George Michael advised acidifiers strongly for fine haired people also. I plan to try Nexxus Ensure (pH 3.0) later this week.

[/ QUOTE ]I get what you're saying. I have been told by a lot of stylists that my hair is fine but I have a lot of strands. I mean you can't see my scalp or anything but I know it will get better as it grow back out from some uneven spots in it. Thanks!

My hair is fine and thin. I've never had "long hair" so, I cant say. I just hope after all the effort put forth, you and I both will find a way to make it work.

I have fine hair...medium thickness. Long hair looks good one me...lol. My hair is texturized so when I airdry it it has a BIG look to it so it doesn't seem as fine. Maybe you could look into different ways of drying/faking it..lol. I know when I flatiron it looks much thinner than when I airdry it for that straight look.

I have fine hair too. Because my hair is natural it may appear to be thicker but that's just an illusion lol. When relaxed I was able to grow my hair close to bra-strap but I would always have layers and wear roller-sets to have a fuller look.

My hair is fine and I have very few strands. I second what Tracy said about rollersets. It makes my hair look thick even though it isn't. I like the wash and wear look too.

I have fine hair. One reason I went natural was because no matter what I did to my relaxed hair you could "see through"it. I never could take a picture without being able to see through my hair to the background! /images/graemlins/mad.gif Now I have the "look" of thick hair by just leaving those relaxers alone!

I also have fine hair, also I had to stop relaxing my hair, because when ever the back grew, I would always get that "thin ends look" it would drive me crazy. Now my back hair is very thick. Plus I use castor oil and Surge.

I have fine hair, but it's not thin. However, the sides ofmy hair are thinner than the rest. When my hair was long it never looked see through, but my hair was never past myshoulders so who knows. Even when I was natural, my dgs were thinner.

My fine results in serious extra care. My hair will break off and it can't take alot of products or it'll look dull.

I have fine hair also, I learned that I can't put alot of product in my hair. I use very light oils to moisturize.my hair has never been realy long either, but it's grown longer than it has ever been since I've joined LHCF!

My hair strands are fine-to-medium. Finer around the edges and medium at the crown. When I was relaxed I always wore my hair layered to make it appear fuller. I got mild relaxers so as not to make it look so flat. But even so, whenever it got past shoulder length it would start looking droopy and thin. Especially since I usually hot-curled & blowdried it to style. Since being natural my hair looks a lot thicker than it is when I wear it out because natural hair has more volume. But when it's wet or straightened you can tell that it's not really that thick. The nice thing is that it's very easy to wash & detangle. When I hear stories about ladies having to divide their hair into sections to wash it I don't feel so bad about having skimpy hair. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif When relaxed I stayed away from heavy products so my hair would stay fluffier.

My hair is fine and of medium density. When I first get a touch-up, I like the smoothness but my hair lays very close to my head. Once I get to week three, I am fine and my hair appears thick, especially if it is curled. I am not sure where I will stop with length, but I know I will have to have the upper sections layered to maintain a look of thickness and make it more versatile.

I could be wrong (oh I hope I am wrong!) but my hair strands seem to be getting thinner and more fragile as I get older. Luckily I have plenty of hair on my head. I feel that if I do not try now to grow out my hair, I may never have this chance again.

Ignore the downers and do not tell them anything! We only live once.

I have fine hair, but not thin. I like rollersets, smooth ponytails and buns, flexirod sets are also great.

My stylist used to use Nexxus Diametress and protein which gave me more volume. But I love my hair, I think it is best to just embrace the beauty that is yours and ake it its very best.

I have fine hair that is naturally thinner along the sides. I agree with the others about the rollersets - just make sure you do not add a lot of product beforehand. Layers with your hair slightly flipped can be a cute style to try.

I have fine hair, but there is a lot of it!

I currently wear a blunt cut bob with bangs.

I do believe that fine hair which is past shoulder length tends to look straggly.

I have fine-medium sized strands. This was an interesting discovery because I was always told that my hair was thick. Now it is true that my hair is thick, but I didn't know until recently that there was a distinction between fine and thin, between coarse and thick.

The amount of individual strands I have makes up for the lack of strand coarseness so I believe I can wear my hair long and it not look wierd.

I also have a lot of very thin strands on my head. It does not look thin because I have so very much of the stuff! It does not make any difference how long it is, it is far from see through.

I disagree.

I think it all depends on your preference of how long you want your hair. I think if you have fine hair that is thin and has see-through ends or something then it won't look right. Whoever made this statement must be judging based on someone's head size or shape or they may have seen someone with fine hair that wasn't taken good care of. Who knows! /images/graemlins/weird.gif

I've never heard that fine hair won't lok good long. I have fine hair and mine doesn't look bad long. I guess it just depends on how thin your hair is.

I have fine thin hair, and it is bouncier and fuller when it is short. I keep it long b/c I wear my hair curly, and it looks really thick when it is like that. When my hair is straight, I have Marsha Brady type hair. No seriously, that is what my friend calls me. :)

It's interesting that some of the ladies with fine hair say that they keep their hair in layers because it looks fuller. I'm trying to grow the layers out of my fine hair because I think a blunt cut will make it look fuller.

I have recently realized that my fine hair doesn't look good when it is longer that waist length. So I trimmed about 4 or 5 inches off and I plan to keep it at the length it is now. My hair looked flat and wouldn't hold a curl when it was tailbone length. I wore my hair short (ear length) for two years, it was cute but I like longer hair on me.
