Hi there!
Just curious. I know that they are supposed to be bad for the hair shaft, but If I recall, I've used a boxed no-lye relaxer for many years with no problem. My very first relaxer was a Dark and Lovely no-lye that was applied by my mother way back when.

I don't really like salons because of certain techniques that they've used (ie: using a fine toothed comb to detangle and telling me to call them when the relaxer started to burn. grrr). I think that some of the prices are outrageous too, hence the reason why I switch back to my natural every few years. I just don't like the idea of someone being in total control of my hair. If they did an awesome job, I'd understand, but untill then....

Lye relaxers tend to burn my scalp and hairline...even when I apply petroleum jelly as a protectant. Also, my hair is naturally very thick and dense. I don't like stick straight hair either.

I was looking into possibly trying a Cream of Nature no-lye, so if anyone has any recommendations and similar hair (as best described), let me know : ))

So yeah, I'd like to see if there are any type 4 ladies out there that still use those easily accessible, cheap, do it yourself boxed no-lye relaxers....with good results. If I hear crickets chirping, I'll understand : ))

I've always used a box relaxer. The one time I didn't was when I went to a stylist who had their own stuff and my hair just didn't feel right.
I used Revlon-lye -Super from 1988-1997.
Then I switched to Creme of Nature-no lye-Super or regular and have been using that ever since. Recently I've been using Optimum-no lye.
Both are very good to me.
I don't put in my own relaxers though. I either take a box with me to salon or they have it.

Wow, Sylver, I just looked at your album and you and your hair look fabulous! Thanx for the response too : )

I use Profectiv no-lye now, but I used Lusters Pink for years. My mom who has beautiful/long relaxed hair uses Soft and Beautiful no-lye.

My mom has 4a/b hair and she used African Pride No-Lye relaxer for years, thanks to my late great-aunt's suggestions. Now she uses Africa's Best No-Lye in regular. It made her hair straight and healthy looking, and I did her hair a month ago. She really has nice long hair, and she'll be using it from now on.

I always used boxed no lye.... my #1 fav was Optimum No Lye... my backup fav was Luster's Pink No Lye. I never had a problem with my relaxers. (( I'm natural now )).

I always used boxed no-lyes when I was relaxed as well. Soft & Beautiful Botanicals was working very well for me, but in the past I had used Gentle Treatment and sometimes Dark & Lovely with no problems. The botanicals was easiest on my sensitive scalp--I hardly felt anything. It made my hair really straight, but every relaxer did. If your hair is thicker/more resistant it might still leave some curl :yep:
