Im thinking of getting some braids but my hair is longer than it was the last time I had them. What kind of braids could I get that wouldn't involve my head feeling like it's going to fall off. I work in an environment where braids are acceptable...TG!:)

If this has been a topic before, please post the link!
TIA!

Robin from C&G has very long hair and she used kanekalon braids. She braids her hair all the way down to her hair length and she maintains it for at least two months that way. Maybe you might want to take a look at her site.

Box braids, senagalese twists, cornrows, maybe tree braids depending on the size. There are many types of braids, but not all of them will facilitate healthy hair growth.

I feel that cornrows are the best option and have the least potential for causing damage. I wear cornrows all the time and am currently hitting bra strap.

Princess--I just got my hair cornrowed last wknd. i plan on wearing them for 2 weeks at a time and then getting them rebraided until i reach a nice length. i'm growing out my texturizer.

how long have you been wearing cornrows--off and on for how many months/years?

how long do you keep them in at a time?

What is your maintenance routine/wash regimen with them?

Do you oil your scalp often, etc?

i'd love to attain BSL with the aid of cornrows. my current length is to my shoulders but my hair usually grows very well in braids so i hope i can gain a lof of quick growth.

Any other cornrow/braid suggestions for maintaining bsl?

Thanks

I agree. And that style would favor your face too.

My braid routine is involved and simple at the same time. I follow a 6-weeks in, 2-weeks out system. This is done twice in between touch-ups. I wait 4-weeks post touch-up to resume the cycle.

Been wearing cornrows for 4 years. My stylist actually talked me into them because my hair was giving me the blues so I was just going to have her cut it all off and give me an texturizer and be done with it. My hair was around chin length back then.

I oil by scalp every three days, moisturizer my hair every other day, cleanse my scalp every 1-2 weeks with Organic Root Stimulator soapless cleanser, and wash my scalp/hair with diluted clarifying shampoo 1 week before taking out the braids.

I should mention that I add essential oils (tea tree, lavender, cedarwood, and rosemary) to my oil (I use Do-Gro Growth/Anti-Itch).

I made a post about how to avoid matting when taking out your braids. I'll try and find it and bump it up. There is no worst set back than matting/super tangled tresses.

Oh, and I have extensions added. I had my own hair braided once and I was so anxious the whole time. I feel my hair is more protected with extensions. I use kanakelon pony :bud: :) !

Thanks Princess. Great info. I did PM you basically with this same question--and I'm sorry if I'm taking over this post--don't mean too! I'm shooting for BSL hair too. hope you're not offended mscounselor!

Princess--how do you keep your cornrows neat for 4-6 weeks? Mine look wild after 2 weeks and I sleep with a doo rag.

It's funny that you started this thread. I was just thinking my braids are too cumbersome. My hair is APL (barely) now and I had to make my braids long enough to be sure I wasn't going to burn the ends (3 inches longer than my hair). I'm finding this length of braids a little overwhelming. I curled them so they would appear shorter, but its still a whole lotta braids. I'm not a fan of BSL or WSL braids (or even cornrows) but I think that's our only choice.
