Has anyone ever experienced this? Heard that synthetic hair had some sort of chemicals that needed to be washed/removed with ACV.

I experienced this big time years ago when I had braids, but now things seem to be different.

This time when I got my braids done, although I didn't treat them with ACV, I washed them with a Clarifying SHAMPOO (twice) as soon as I got home to remove whatever is on them. So far I haven't experienced any itching or rashes on my skin like I used to in the past. I also make sure to wash my braids (conditioner wash) once per week, and then the part that doesn't have my hair in them I use a clarifying shampoo on.

Since I have been dilligent about washing my braids, so far I haven't experienced any problems.

Hi Tara and thanks for responding

Do you experience any build-up with conditioner washing and braids. I have done the conditioner-washes (with no braids in the head) and about 2 days later, I have severe itching and flaking.

I had made this concoction: olive oil, Pantene Hydrating Curls, Water, Cocoa and Shea butter to put on the braids in order to keep them from being crispy after taking them down - but - I have been encountering the same problems. Flaky scalp that itches like nobody's business. I now am wondering if it is dried conditioner on my scalp

What do you do?

Hey Mufasa,

I haven't experienced build-up with the conditioner wash and braids, but I use Suave Clarifying Conditioner and I make sure to dilute that in a spray bottle with water and do it that way and really scrub my scalp without ripping braids out of my head (I'm rather heavy handed,

).

As for the concoction you made, it sounds like it plus dried conditioner would contribute to build-up. I tend to avoid things with cocoa butter on the scalp or hair because it tends to sit on the hair, and I've found the same thing with Shea Butter UNLESS I mix it with Aloe Vera Gel (not pure but Lilly of the Desert brand, in fact there is an entire recipe I found on another board...but I digress). I wouldn't use these two with braids because it would be to difficult to wash off ESPECIALLY with conditioner.

Have you tried any type of Jherri Curl spray for Moisture? I like World's of Curls because it's pretty light, but while wearing braids I use S-Curl because it's thicker so I think it penetrates the braids more. I took a few braids out and my hair is really soft. So you might try S-Curl, Sta-Sof-Fro, Worlds of Curls or even Care Free Curl Spray, Hawaiian Silky or something with Glycerin at the top of the ingredients because it draws in moisture from the air and makes the hair feel soft. I think the concotion you made might be okay for some sort of leave-in outside of braids, or maybe the shea and olive oil would make a nice hot oil treatment, but for every day or everyother day use it would only build up.

I think if you are experiencing itching, I'd use shampoo once per week, and spray your hair daily with curl activator. Try to avoid getting this on the scalp because for some this can cause itching. I haven't had a problem with that so far.

If you did the conditioner wash without braids, and experienced severe itching, I'd go back to shampoo and find a mild shampoo for you that doesn't dry your hair out. With conditioner washing (in and out of braids) I don't experience build-up, but I don't use grease, shea butter, or any heavy oils in my hair, so the only thing I am washing out is some glycerine based product and normal sweat and sebum and so conditioner is enough to remove all of that. My conditioners even suds up

If I was using heavier products I would go back to shampoo.

Edited to add: Curl Activators are not intended to anything else but moisturize the hair. But they don't work for everyone.

I know it was long, if I missed anything let me know. I hope something helped

I just finished washing my hair, and was thinking about this post
grin.gif
(ya'll are always on my mind, lol), anyway, I need to change something. Although with the few braids I've taken out there has been no buildup, I do kind of expect a little bit of build-up because the hair is in braids, and even with shampoo it seems like it would be tough to get everything out.

But it should not be like glue when the hair is taken down. But so far so good, but if there was a little bit I wouldn't let that worry me too much.

Say Tara -

Thank you so much for the info. I wish there was a way I could know when folks respond to posts

Anywho, I have something like the glycerine you mentioned somewhere around here - I just purchased it - now I can use it

When trying it initially, I wasn't too keen on the smell. I washed the hair once per week. Perhaps I need to wash it more often

I will still give this a try - anything that keeps the itching from going on would be welcomed!

Kindest Regards.
