Air drying your hair- is it bad for relaxed hair

Ladies I am very confused /images/graemlins/confused.gif. I was told by someone that air drying relaxed hair is bad. That it will cause hair breakage. Is this true?? And can anyone give me tips on how to do a good twist out. I can't do it for the life of me. How do you keep the twists tight and from unraveling? I need step by step instructions. Thanks

Well I haven't been relaxed for years but since the hair is straighter I would try 2-strand twist then before reaching the ends 3-strand braids it then try to secure it with no breakage ponytaail holders. Actually air drying is best for any type of hair less manipulation/lees heat=healthier hair, it just might not get that bone straight look. Just make sure you have no tangles. But I'm no expert here.

I agree with the above....air drying is very good. I do it all the time. If you have enough curl left in your hair, the end of the twists should curl up around each other and stay together on their own. It does for me anyway. If not, I guess you can divide the last inch or so into 3 separate pieces and plait it to keep together. I suppose if the hair is bone straight, that might not work either. You could put hair-friendly bands on the ends to keep them together. I saw someone like that at the grocery store yesterday and it looked cute.

We had a discussion on this in January and this is what the thinking behind airdrying being bad was: Your hair doesn't dry straight...it dries crinkly making it prone to breakage. Some people suggested that perhaps you could use a prodct that smoothes the cuticles down.

HTH

I alternate just to be on the safe side.

This is a good thread. I have been experiencing alot of shedding, and I think the air-drying is the culpit /images/graemlins/frown.gif. I did an little experiment to see why I was getting so much shedding. I wash weekly so I dried my hair w/ the dryer for 2 weeks last month, and then airdried for 2weeks. When I use the dryer the days following my hair didn't shed as much, but the 2 weeks I airdried my hair shedded like crazy between washes. /images/graemlins/blush.gif I plan to alternate for a while to see how my hair responds to using the dryer so much. I use it on cool w/ low air and don't dry completly, so I guess it depends on your hair /images/graemlins/smirk.gif. I don't know.
Has anyone else had an experince like this w/ airdrying?

DazzlingD,
I don't do the twist out or braid out and I don't do the pony tail method because I don't like the crinkle the ponytail holder leaves in my hair. I washed and air dried my relaxed hair last night. I am exactly 3 weeks past my last touch-up. I leave my hair down to dry.
This is my technique:
I shampooed with Elasta QP Shampoo for Relaxed Hair, conditioned with Elasta QP Intense conditioner and towel dried.
I then sprayed with Elasta QP H-Two Leave in Conditioner.
Next, I applied Organics Liquid Leave-in Hair Mayo by Africa's Best (it gives wonderful slip--I swear by it).
I gently combed through my hair with a seamless comb (the leave in liquid mayo makes combing an easy task).
Then I applied a small amount of coconut oil and jojoba oil that I had rubbed together in my hands first and used to smooth my hair down.
I then allowed my hair to air dry completely.
My ends were just a little crinkly. I applied Moisture Max Wrap, Set & Style Lotion to my hair and rolled it on large magnetic rollers until the lotion had time to dry.
My hair and ends were straight, shiny and easy to comb. I could feel my new growth, but it is soft and combs easy.
When my ends seem dry, I mix castor oil with a light oil such as jojoba or creamy product (Dudley's PCA, Moisture Max Wrap lotion, Elasta QP Mango Butter, etc.) and apply. This works better for me than any method I have tried and I am beginning to retain more length because it helps keep my hair and ends moisturized and smooth. No heat (except for deep conditioning) has been good for my hair.
I don't know if this will help you, but I am a new member and just dying to contribute to the board. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

That sounds like a great routine Cherricola.. I'm a big fan of Elasta QP also /images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Dazzlingd and honeycomb719:

What is it that you are putting in your hair? What shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer are you using?

I ask because my hair is relaxed and I've been airdrying for about a month now, and no breakage.

I hesitated at first because I've always been told that you should never air dry if your hair has been relaxed, but after hearing all the good stories on these threads, I decided to give it a try.

I either shampoo with Neutrogena's moisturizing shampoo(very good at getting rid of build up, but leaves hair soft), or QP creme conditioning shampoo(leaves hair amazingly soft).

Rinse thoroughly!

Use ACV rinse.

Condition with olive oil and ORS Mayo under plastic cap and under hooded dryer for 20-30 minutes. Rinse. Sometimes, I follow with Pantene's smooth & sleek because I think it's good for the dry ends.

Rinse out thoroughly!

Immediately add (while hair is still wet) a moisturizer. Lady Hilda oil moisturizer (I believe this is only found in Boston), or QP Elasta moisturizer.

Saturate my hair with S-curl and seal it with a little bit of QP Elasta mango butter moisturizer. Then it's up in a pony-tail.

The following day, I oil my scalp with my oil mixture (castor, rosemary, jojoba, and coconut). I oil my scalp again 2-3 days later.

Every once and a while, I set my hair, but I air dry more often.

I try to wash my hair every 5 days.

Your shedding may be due to the products you are using or the comb.

Hey ladies, sorry I didn't respond earlier. I was busy studying. Anyway, I asked the question because my mom was on my case about letting my hair air dry. I had to ask the hair goddesses what they thought. I am sure my mom knows what she is talking about. Because I specifically remember her telling me not to cut my hair when I was younger /images/graemlins/naughty.gif . I did it anyway behind her back and her I am today, 12 years later struggling to get it to grow back /images/graemlins/wallbash.gif

I have never actually experienced shedding or breakage from air drying. I actually just started doing it. But like I said I wanted to see what you thought. Thanks /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Honestly, I don't like to leave my hair wet (air dry). I either wrap and sit under the dryer or roll and set it. I don't think it's good for my hair. But I see a lot of people do it and I think if you really condition your hair well you don't have to worry about it getting dry and breaking off. If your hair is in bad condition..leaving it wet and air drying it will make it worse. Just my opinion /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have. But I noticed that when I first started airdrying like in december til january my hair was so healthy and in good condition when I went for my retouch, I was so impressed but it's also the time I started useing the UBH so I can't really say it was the air drying.

I do get a LOT of sheding and dryness when I do twist outs or let it air dry in a pony tail, after taking it down and combing there was sheding/breaking.

Saturday I blow dried and bumped the ends (which I never do) and my hair had such a finished salon look and I have'nt shedded, except what was normal so I'm not sure. I know too much heat is bad.

But going back to marvins jeans theory for trimming it also makes sense with air drying, if you wash and air dry your jeans or towels they are stiff, but when you dry them in the the dryer they come out soft but they do fade and wear quicker.

So for me It's a dilema, I guess I'll keep alternating til I get the best method.

For me I've never gotten the hang of it. My hair seems to be twice the volume and poofy. I just rollerset sit under the dryer (not completely dry) and then do dry twist outs. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cherricola, This is a reputable contribution. I'm going to try it b/c my dry time with the ponytail method is more than a day. Thanks for the info.

I really think that it all depends on how your hair was processed. I have alot of underprocessed hair and some hair relaxed with no lye relaxers and air drying doesn't always work for me. Underprocessing and no-lye relaxers leave the cuticle raised which can make air dying smoothly harder. When all of my hair was lye relaxed properly I could air dry alot easier than I do now.

I was the opposite. When I used a no-lye mild my hair came out straighter and I air dryed all the time. When my hair was partially dry, I would blow dry and curl - I did this once a week and my hair grew, but it was dry.

Now that I switched to lye, I can seem to get my hair as straight with the lye so air drying is out unless it is set on rollers. I don't know what the deal is??

Let me tell ya'll /images/graemlins/grin.gif I did a conditoner wash with Suave coconut last night and put some oil in my hair ( I wanna call it wonder oil /images/graemlins/confused.gif) and slicked it into a pony-tail. It dried beautifully! I LOVE airdying!! I noticed less breakage than with a blowdryer /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I use a no-lye relaxer
I wash every 3 days with Nexxus shampoos and conditioners
Deep condition after every wash
Finger comb my hair into a ponytail "styke" without the pony tail holder
Add a dap of oil and let it air dry

Its always come out straight and I havent had problems with shedding or breaking.

Thats my routine and that's all I do to my hair. I refuse to touch it further or add any other chemicals to it, BTW I straighten my hair about every 3-4 months. And right now I'm past underarm lenght.

Honi can you tell me how you do your twist outs. I need step by step instructions if thats ok /images/graemlins/smile.gif

hey dollie.

1st: welcome to the forum
2nd: i see that this thread is like nearly 5years old. LOL no worries. I am natural now but I used to be relaxed. I would air dry all the time in the summer. Everything does not work for everybody.

This is what I used to do (in the summer):
In the shower I used a 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner (usually Dove or Ivory). Then I would put a teeny bit of some kind of oil (it would vary). I like to do as little work as I can with the best results so I would often use my body oil in my hair. I always use Neutrogena Body Oil so I'd usually put some in my hair. Then I'd GENTLY squeeze (not wring) the excess water and add Sebastian WET liquid gel. (I tried Suave and other brands of liquid gel and I only use Sebastian WET & I would only recommend that brand.) Then I'd twist & pin, bun, braid, or just let it hang loose. When it was dry it was always soft and would have waves.
Hope this helps & again, welcome.

Sorry this is happening to you and welcome to the board I airdry all the time and i am relaxed also is biosilk a moisturizer i have heard the name of the product before but i dont know anything about it.

I am relaxed and I always air dry. But I airdry in a bun. After my wash and DC w/heat, I proceed to towel dry. Then I add my leave-in moisturizer....sometimes Jane Carter revitalizing LeaveIn, sometimes Doo Gro Growth Treatment LeaveIn....then i seal with my butter/oil pomade, and bun. I tie with silk scarf and leave it alone. My hair always so soft, smooth, and moist.:yep:
