After you take out twist/braids...

The reason I'm asking is because my mom just got some twists (with weave). This is the first time she's worn weave since I've been born (18 yrs.) I don't know if she's had weave before that, I don't think so though

Anyways... I know she doesn't know the first thing about weave, twists, braids, etc. and I don't want her to wreck her hair while she's taking out the twists and afterwards (which probably won't be for a couple of months). Her relaxed her is very thin. She doesn't like dealing with a lot of new growth either.

What I'm trying to ask is this:
-right after she takes the twists out what should she do? Detangle? Wash?
-how soon can she relax?
-any other tips and/or things she needs to be cautious of when removing weave for the 1st time???????????

does she need a perm? only if she NEEDS one should she relax.

she can take them out then comb through and get the hair detangled, then wash.

Well, she'll probably need a relaxer after she takes them out in a couple of months. Should she wait 2wks after to relax?

I'll probably end up detangling for her because she combs so rough and I know she'll probably end up loosing more hair

DEFINITELY have her detangle her hair right after she takes her twists out. If she doesn't her hair could tangle and clump together during shampooing. A few days prior to taking out her twists she should wash them. That'll cut down on the product build up on her hair. She could them use a braid removal spray to help her take them down. After detangling she can do a ACV rinse. She can mix two cups of water with 1/4 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar. This will thoroughly clean her hair and scalp of any remaining build up. After that she can conditioner wash, shampoo and then deep condition.

She should at least wait three or four days before a touch up to be on the safe side. I would recommend a week or two with a good protein treatment halfway through. She could do a loose braid out to cut down on the manipulation just as long as the person relaxing her hair can tell the difference between her relaxed hair and new growth. I would say wait longer than a few days, but if she doesn't know how to handle her new growth she could get a lot of breakage at the demarcation line. Hope this help.

I'm not sure about twists, but when I had braids I washed and deep conditioned my hair between every week to every other week. Just depended on how busy I was. I also moisturized like crazy and took a few days to take them down and wasn't washing during that period so I had some build up. It could also be because my braids were small (never again). If she washes her hair that frequently, doesn't put any heavy oil near the base of the twist and the twists aren't small she won't have to worry about it.

i agree with detangling i made the mistake of unbraiding then conditioning and it was a mess the hair that shed matted and tangled with the hair that hadnt and it made for a long scary detangling

same here :/ thats why i always stress that you need to detangle. talk about hair lost everywhere!!! took me hours to get through working from ends to roots. i had a BIGGG pile when i was done.
