Are there any things in particular that you choose to do afterwards? Just wondering if any of you all did anything extra as far as conditioning or moisturizing...from my understanding our hair is fairly weak after this process and wanted to know how u try to combat this.THANX!!!

That's a good question Hunnybunny. I know someone will suggest keeping your hair moisturized. I'm wondering how soon after getting it relaxed, should it be conditioned or do a protein treatment. I am getting my hair relaxed tomorrow. I also want to know what I should do to it tonight to prep my hair before I go. I gave myself a protein (Aphogee 2 minute Reconstructor) last weekend. Hope someone comes along to answer your question, and maybe mine too!

Blessings,

Thanx I hope so to!...I just got mine relaxed last nite...and I'm so paranoid, that I just have it in a clip with my ends tucked under, I 'm afraid of losing any hairs if I wear it out...I want to condition..just not sure when or with what..lol...and I was curious like you...on a before and after treatment for next time I get it relaxed...hopefully someone will come along and drop their thoughts on the matter.

I just did my own hair this week with Affirm. I bought their protein and moisturizing conditioners. I used the protein conditioner immediately after the relaxer, as per the instructions. This is really good for the hair because your cuticles are wide open after a relaxer which helps the conditioner penetrate your hair. For that reason, I think it's a good idea to do a protein conditioner (followed by a moisturizing conditioner, of course!). /images/graemlins/wink.gif The Motions relaxer system recommends this also.

I may have to buy my own relaxer (motions or affirm) and take it to my stylist next time. I don't even know what kind he uses. Those sound like good products. My only concern, is wondering if the stylist will use it, the protein treatment afterward. But for my $$ they had better! They are always so rushed, and money hungry. That's why I only go to get a relaxer. They put me under the dryer after the relaxer, with a conditioner on my head. Afterwards they rinse it out and start rolling me. Guess they are not using a moisturizing condtioner after the protein one, or either they are just putting a moisturizing condtioner on me. Whatever the case, they only use one condtioner on me ALL the time. I'm taking my own oil (WGO), and other products. They don't even put oil or leave in on my hair before they roll it. All they use is setting lotion. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Compassion, if using lye relaxer is important to you, note that you probably have to buy a large container of Affirm in order to get the lye relaxer. In looking high and low for Affirm in New York, it appears that the smallest quantity of the lye version is a 4 pound tub. Luckily, I had my gym bag and flat shoes to change into for the walk home!! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif From what I have seen, the versions that come in the smaller, regular sized jars all contain calcium hydroxide, or guanidine hydroxide (same thing, I think) and come with activator for you to mix into the relaxer. If no lye isn't a problem for you, go for it. But if you're sticking to lye, be prepared to lug a huge vat home with you. This might not be the case outside of New York, but that's what I've noticed. Good luck.

so tru kitkat.. preach on!!!!! I thought i was the only one who noticed that they only sell the lye version in 4lb tubs. Hey where ydo you live in NY?? Maybe i could pay you for a bit of your massive relaxer cream (if you're willing of course /images/graemlins/wink.gif) I cant afford to pay $40 for ABNYTHUING right now.

Hey, thanks for the info Kitkat! Fortunately, I have a whole sale guy that lives next door to me. He sells most hair care products for ethnic hair. He goes to all the salons selling. I just found out recently what he does-thankfully! So I can just have him lug that vat over to my home. /images/graemlins/smile.gif That's a load off huh?? Oh, and yes I use lye relaxers. My hair stylist told me that the no lye, deposits a calcium build up on your hair, and that's why the hair becomes hard. He likens it to your bones, and how calcium makes them stronger and hard. He's an instructor at one of the local beauty schools. He's always so full of information, unlike my other stylist (a woman).

so there arent any salons in the city that do the whole affirm system? does that mean you have to pick up the relaxer yourself? i cant afford to go to the marvins of the world so i am curious. God bless you all.

I now do a protein treatment after every relaxer. Hair is at it's weekest after a relaxer, so that's the best time to start strengthening it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Azul, I would guess salons that use Affirm probably use the entire system, but I can't say for sure. You'd think why wouldn't they, but you never know. Some places might want to skimp out. I don't think you'd have to buy the relaxer yourself, though. I would check with salons before booking appointments with them. Most should tell you over the phone whether they offer Affirm, Mizani, or other systems.

My hairstylist also does what you do: uses the Affirm protein conditioner immediately after rinsing out the Affirm lye relaxer. In addition, I repeat the protein conditioner 3 days later at home because I feel that the color/relaxer combo I have makes my hair doubly-weak. The jury is still out, though, on whether the Profectiv purple stuff (can't recall the proper name) actually does stop the chemical damage...you're supposed to use it 3 days before and 3 days after a relaxer. I figure it can't hurt.

Oh - and during the Winter, because of the subzero temperatures plus icy winds, I don't wear my hair down after a touchup -ever. I put it right back up into my protective style. I'm hoping Spring will reveal the results of my cautious efforts now.

Hi Julia,

I do it right after I wash my hair with the neutralizing shampoo. I don't wait. I read that the best time to do a protein or reconstructor treatment is right after you rinse out the relaxer. The Affirm relaxer system does this. With that relaxer, you have to do the conditioner before you use the neutralizing shampoo. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

hello all. new to site, I want to take the CATHY HOWSE 365 DAY CHALLENGE. She recommends affirm where can I buy in NEW YORK CITY??

I try not to do too much to my hair except for using a reconstructor (Affirm 5n1)...after I do that, I just put in a bun and leave it alone.

After I relax my hair, I moisturize my hair with Profective Megagrowth hair lotion or Creme of Nature Oil moisturizer for two weeks. A week after I relax my hair I do a light protein treatment with Aphoghee 2 minute keratin and sometimes I add a little keracare humecto over that and sit under the dryer for 30 minutes..After that week pass I go back to my regular regimen which is basically washing/deep conditioning every 3 days rotating between a moisturizing conditioner and a light protein treatment:)

Oh you do a protein treatment right after a relaxer. I deep condition right after a relaxer. I'll try that and see what happens:)
