Dear Ladies,

I was in Addis Ababa for two weeks.

Yes, I was absolutely in awe of the thick and lovely flowing locks of my Ethiopian sisters. Wow!!!!!!!

Hair ran in the range from 4a mixed with 3C to 3a.

There are some 4bs too but those from the other tribes not located in Addis Ababa. 4bs that I spotted were usually not from Ethiopia and had shorter hair.

Did not see many Ethiopian women sporting short hair either.

Not many relaxers, a lot of wet sets.

Not many single plait extension braids but cornrow extension braids popular but not kept in for a long periods of time.

A lot of hair colouring.

Some cleverly disguised weaves but hair is always human hair and no full weaves. Well I saw one and it was very odd looking.

Popular styles: thick big curly afros 4a/3c, loose free flowing 3b curls, curly hair straw sets, straight hair done with blow dryers. Small single plaits without extensions done when hair is blown straight. Average hair length is shoulder.

Hair is a big thing. If you can't make your hair lovely you don't leave your house without covering it with a cap or scarf. They are not big into product use.

Weather is hot and dry.

They alternate between curly and straight styles.

Sounds like a cool trip. Average length was shoulder? Do you mean with shrinkage? Sounds like relaxers are not very popular there.

Hi Mwedzi,

I suspect that some of the longer lengths were achieved with a light blow dry but then some of the hair is all curly like very few cuts and trims because it looked like that with the shrinkage. What I do know is that they alternate curly one week and straight the next week. It's just amazing, that you hardly spot any damaged hair. No relaxers are not popular. Even women with coarser textures get wet sets and then get that blown out.

Ethiopians do have very nice curly and kinky textures. As do Eritreans and other East Africans.
They seem to have a lot of variation between type 2-type 4.
