Hey ladies,

So I'm always seeing a lot regimens that include sulfate free shampoo. I have seen the L'Oreal Ever-pure sulfate-free shampoo and the Hair One at Sallys. I would greatly appreciate some feed back on the benefits of sulfate free and why some people only buy that kind. Currently in my regimen I am using Motions Lavish Conditioning Shampoo or Mixed Chicks Gentle Cleansing Shampoo, and I feel they do pretty good. But I am always up for trying new products that might help my hair.

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using?

Why did you switch?

When did you start using it?

What differences have you noticed in your hair?

Thanks :drunk:

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using? Elasta QP creme conditioning shampoo. I just bought organix shampoos (the Moroccan oil & Macadamia oil) to try them out. All organix products were BOGO free at Walgreens yesterday. If I don't like them I will send them back.

Why did you switch? I switched years ago when I found out that in the long run sulfates are "bad" for your hair if used too often.

When did you start using it? 2009

What differences have you noticed in your hair? Not too sure. I've mainly used sulfate free during my natural journey. 1x a month I clarify w/ Neutrogena anti residue (which is VERY stripping)

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using?
I was Organix sulfate free shampoo. The first one I tried was the Organix Coconut milk shampoo but I'm slowly tryinqthe other kinds they have too. They all smell wonderful btw.

Why did you switch?
I switched to sulfate free because I do not want to strip my hair of its natural oils (which with having type 4hair isn't very much already). Also sulfate shampoos not only dried out my hair but also my scalp causing my psoriasis to flare up something bad. I didn't even know the culprit of my flaking until I switched to sulfate free.

When did you start using it?

I started using sulfate free shampoos about a year ago. I also switched over to a paraben free, cone free reggie since sulfate free shampoos cant remove most cones.

What differences have you noticed in your hair?

My hair doesnt feel stripped after I wash it. I dont hav to DC as often. Went from DCing 1x a week to about once every month. My hair also stays moisturized for longer. And on top of that my hair has more of a natural shine to it without having to add any type of moisturizer or oil.

Thanks :drunk:

I use keracare's sulfate free detangling shampoo. I switched after thinking that sulfate shampoos may have been too drying and at the time I was washing about twice a week. I've been using it for about two years and no matter what I try I end up back with the keracare. Every now and then I'll use a sulfate shampoo if I think I have product buildup.

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using?
I like Giovanni Smooth as Silk shampoo and Nature's Gate Tea Tree shampoo. They both clean well without stripping my hair and produce lots of sods esp. the Nature's Gate one.

Why did you switch?
I switched because I found regular shampoos to be too strong, leaving my hair completely stripped and my scalp dry and itchy. I have very dry skin and regular shampoos tend to irritate it further.

When did you start using it?
I started off using Organix Coconut Milk shampoo after it was suggested to me here almost two years ago.

What differences have you noticed in your hair?
I have noticed that my hair doesn't tangle as badly when washing, my hair isn't left completely stripped after rinsing, and my scalp doesn't itch terribly like it used to. I think doing pretreatments with oil also help this as well.

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using?
Trader Joe's Tree Tea Tingle
Curl Junkie Daily Fix (cleansing conditioner)
Uncle Harry's Soapless Shampoo
Giovanni 50:50 Hydrating-Clarifying Shampoo

Why did you switch?
Sulfates are too drying for my hair in general.

When did you start using it?
On and off for years. I've used various shampoos over the years, both sulfate and sulfate free and sulfate-free usually wins.

What differences have you noticed in your hair?
Not as stripping on the hair and scalp. Softer hair. If I have hair color, it last longer. Scalp doesn't itch.

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using?
I've recently tried Terressentials Pure Earth Hair Wash, and I love it. During my transition I found M.O.P(Modern Organic Products) C-hydration Shampoo which is my staple.
Why did you switch?
I was using Design Essentials Moisture Retention Shampoo, and the formula changed. I could literally feel my transitioning hair shrink up under the water and make my relaxed ends tangle. I tried a lot of shampoos, but I noticed that same trend with my hair until I used the MOP.
When did you start using it?
2008
What differences have you noticed in your hair?
I like that it really cleans my hair, but it doesn't completely strip it.

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using?
Dr Bronners Castile soap (first one tried and Im still using it)
Black Soap (used for a while and stopped didnt feel like it cleansed my hair and scalp well enough, but still use on face and to bathe)
HV cocasta shampoo bar (started using in 2010 and still use)
Terresentials (clay based cleanser, started using last year and still use)

Why did you switch?
Info from the board about drying effect of sulphates.

When did you start using it?
Dec 2009 1 month after I BCd and started using all natural products

What differences have you noticed in your hair?

I cant really say that Ive seen a big difference because I started using 1 month after I BCd and I didnt transition. So its been the only type of shampoo/cleanser Ive used since being natural

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using? I use my shikakai bar or SheaMoisture shampoo. I like them both but using the bar is just more time consuming.

Why did you switch? My hair just doesn't like sulfates. Even after conditioning, it stille felt dry and stripped.

When did you start using it? Hmm...about 2 years. Maybe! Don't really remember and I co-washed for a while before I started using shampoo.

What differences have you noticed in your hair? Less matting, hair stays moist and not stripped.

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using? EO Lavender Mint, As I Am Cleansing pudding, SM shampoo, CJ gentle cleansing

Why did you switch? I didn't switch on purpose. It's just all the shampoos I use don't have sulfates in them.

When did you start using it? About a year ago.

What differences have you noticed in your hair?
My hair feels the same. I don't really notice much of a difference because I always have used mositurizing shampoos.

I'm sorry but I have to make a slight adjustment here about the bolded. I have several sulfate-free shampoos that remove cones and parabens, etc.

They are Keracare 1st lather clarifying shampoo, Beauty Without Cruelty Rosemary Mint shampoo, and I Elucence Clarifying shampoo.

Believe it or not sulfate-free clarifying shampoos do remove cones and other build-up in the hair.

Chi Brilliance Instant Balancing shampoo is also sulfate-free and it is a neutralizing shampoo that removes heavy build-up and chemical residue off the hair and scalp including cones.

Strangely not all shampoos with sulfates remove all cones either. Mostly clarifying and/or chelating poos remove cones whether they have sulfates or are sulfate-free. This is what I understand about what removes cones from the hair.

My hair thrives a lot better with sulfate-free shampoos now - it is not as dried out and dull as when I used sulfate poos on a regular basis.

This is why I went on a hunt for sulfate-free shampoos of all kinds, ie, protein, moisture, clarifying, neutralizing, etc...and I found and use them to avoid dull, dried up hair.

This is actually really great info to know. Thanks for telling me. I didn't know there were sulfate free shampoos that could remove cones.

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using?
Wen Fig

Why did you switch?
I'm transitioning again (8 months post texlax) and my last shampoo/DC experience was beyond irritating. I had that stripped down feel going on with my hair and I just cant deal. I decided to make this change and see if there was a difference and there was :yep::lick:

When did you start using it?
Today! 3/14 Happy Pi Day!!! lol

What differences have you noticed in your hair?
I just added a post about my experience here http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=572109&page=8

yaya I just saw that clarifying shampoo yesterday and put it in my mind to use it once a month when I switch over.

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using?
I use Abba pure moisture shampoo and Shea moisture coconut and hibiscus shampoo.

Why did you switch?
When I was relaxed I used to use Head and Shoulder's shampoo to wash my hair because I had itchy dry scalp. One day I saw my sister rollersetting her hair and I noticed her wet hair looked so much healthier then how my hair looked when it was wet. My hair looked like a bird's nest when it was wet, wispy, fried and just plain unhealthy looking. My sister used sulfate shampoos as well, but I happened to know from doing research that Head and Shoulders was more drying then the average sulfate shampoo. So I decided to stop using it, and did some research and found out that sulfates dry out the hair, so I switched to sulfate free shampoo. My hair drastically improved after that, and my wet hair no longer looked liked it was damaged. My hair looked more moisturized, smoother, and shinier.

When did you start using it?
I started using sulfate free shampoos about 4 years ago.

I use sulfate free shampoos, no one brand consistently. I can say with this resolved my long standing issues with dry flaky scalp. I just got my husband to switch to sulfate free two weeks ago. He was just commenting last night that his hair is no longer dry like it was when he used sulfate shampoos. He felt like he couldn't wash daily before b/c it would dry out his hair, but if he didn't wash daily it would get so oily that it would cause acne on the hairline. Switched to sulfate free...problem solved.

To the bolded. :yep: Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Hydrating-Clarifying sure does remove all the bad.

What kind of sulfate- free shampoo are you using?
Shea Moisture Moisture Retention and Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus shampoos. My hair is so soft and clean after using these.

Not all sulfate-free shampoos are good for me though. I cannot use Organix Macadamia Nut shampoo or Giovanni shampoos because they still dry out my hair like sulfates do.

Why did you switch?

It felt like sulfate shampoos turned my hair to brittle straw.

When did you start using it?

About one year ago.

What differences have you noticed in your hair?

My hair can be clean without breaking my strands down. The Shea Moisture shampoos seem to make my hair stronger when wet. I can shampoo my hair without using a conditioner or leave-in afterward and it wouldn't be the end of the world- although I would only not condition afterward if I was really tired or busy.
