A different kind of shedding problem....

Ok - so we shed 100 hairs a day.. some of us have problems and shed more.. fine. BUT, i have a major CLEANING problem in my apt. i have my hair up in a bun EVERYDAY and take it down once a day to finger comb, reposition and add non-alcoholic aloe gel. so why do i find shed hair balls (im the only female in the house and have no animals) stuck to all of my shoes, in the hallway, in my drawers, in every area of my bedroom? and when i wash, besides the ball in the drain, i find hair all over the shower walls, the faucet handles, etc. i am NOT that wild with my hair b/c obviously i want to retain, so why is it shedding everywhere? is this normal? anyone else have a similar issue. its been this way for a long while. i dont see when my hair is coming out or have any thinning, but somehow its everywhere and i have to sweep everyday and i'm only APL!! is kinda embarrassing. any thoughts?

My hair is just like this. I just don't know what to do about other than cleaning more. I actually use a little hand held lint roller on my bathroom floor every morning after combing my hair.

My guess is because you're only finger combing, some of your shed hair remains on your head and drops off at odd times. Maybe you don't notice hairs that fall on your clothes when you finger comb which later fall onto the floor.

When I was wearing extensions, I was constantly redoing braids so seeing hair wasn't anything unusual. But I also have 3 cats and so that hair sorta takes the trophy and I find myself focused on vacuuming that much more than noticing how much of the hair from my head is on the floor.

So perhaps it's normal. You're just noticing it coz you're on a mission not to shed. :lachen: You know what they say, if you look for ghosts, you'll begin to see them. OK, I dunno who says that, but I don't doubt this falls under the law of attraction theories. :look:

I have the same problem. Almost every day I see hair balls on my bedroom floor. I'm seeing more now since I've started protective styling (which is very strange).

My hair is very damaged, but since I have been taking vitamins for the last year I haven't seen any shedding. I dye my hair constantly, and haven't had a trim in six months. So are you taking any vitamins?

Well dang you just made me want to take my vitamins more regularly. :lachen:

I think the shedding is normal. I finger comb and gently tug my hair and I lose like 30 strands a day that I actually see. But I have some thick hair so I'm not worried. :yep: I hope you aren't either. Garlic shampoo is supposed to stop shedding. Just in case you ARE worried.

I have been using garlic shampoo for about a month now and I still have shedding, just not as much. You might want to try that. I bought Nutrene Garlic Shampoo on www.bluebeez.com for like $5.99 I hope this information is useful to you.

that's what my hair does, but not huge balls but then again my hair probably isn't as long as your's, mine is only shoulder length. But it's because all your shed hair hasn't come out because all you're doing is finger combing it. Because if i take my hair out from being in a bun and i tug on the ends a little i'll have about 5-6 shedded hairs with bulbs on the tip..it doesn't bother me anymore since i know it's not because my hair is breaking off.

i thought that having hair everywhere is kind of weird, but it's pretty common. My white friends said what they do when there's hair everywhere especially in their carpet they get an old brush and brush it over the carpet to get as much out of the carpet as they can. The reason why it might seem like its everywhere because other people probably get rid of their shed hairs over the bathroom sink while they're styling their hair, or in the shower when washing. but since you've been bunning yours probably get distributed around more since your not combing or doing anything to your hair.

I have this problem.... but it's in the shower. Whenever I go to wash my hair I have tons of shed hairs everywhere.... sliding down my legs getting caught ... everywhere. It's so annoying but I only notice it when I bun after co-washing and leave the bun in for a two-three days. So I agree with Noni, it's just shed hairs that are "trapped" and come out at weird times.

My hair is the same way! Recently, I read on a site written for non-minority women that cones may make your hair thinner (see link below and justgreen444's response dated 10-23-06, 4:38 pm). Since reading that information, I have eased up on my products that contain cones AND I HAVE NOTICED LESS SHEDDING!!! Now I'm trying to decide if I should throw away everything (which is a LOT of product) that has cones in it, or if I should use them up and just don't purchase anymore.

Justgreen444 also gives an extensive list of conditioners which do not contain cones. I am also considering giving up/throwing out ALL the products I have which contain mineral oil (I don't have as many of these as those which contain cones, but it still is a lot of product).

HTH.

Can you get a Denman brush to help remove all the shed hairs?

i actually do brush if i feel like my fingers are getting stuck and i need more powerful detangling, but i use that goody jojoba brush. the denman pulled out too much hair for my liking. the goody pulls out some and i clean it after every use. if the hair shedding is from brushing, how does it end up in my hallway when i wear protective styles. if its normal, i'll accept it, i just felt like a weirdo for a moment there....

Yes, i take vitamins everyday - about 10 or so different ones including a hair vitamin. i am so jealous of you - i SO WANT TO BE BLONDE but i'm scared it will detour my hair growth journey. if you have a chance, PM me about ur experience being blonde and how its effected ur hair.

Thanks!

Thanks! i'm not using the shampoo but i'm alternating using that garlic conditioner that the domincans use - i think its actually italian. it has a big garlic clove on it. it says its like a hot oil. the brand starts with an "A". havent seen much results from it yet and it smells HORRIBLE, not like garlic, but just very 'old lady perfumey' (sorry, that was the best description i had).:ohwell:

That makes sense. so do you think that brushing daily isnt really as harmful as pple think? do you think i would lose the same amount either way? each day i debate if i should brush, comb or finger comb. LHCF has me paranoid :lachen:

yeah - is pretty annoying when u live in a bldg with low or medium water pressure and you have to literally pluck the hairs off ur body b/c the water isnt strong enough to do it :wallbash:

Where can I find some pure garlic oil? I don't want it mixed with anything else.....

I need to do some pre-pooing with this baby to help with my shedding.

LMAO.....The water pressure comment...Such a new york issue...I never had to deal with this crap before I moved to nyc!!! Honestly, I would rather pay for my own water if it meant I could actually feel it!!!

The shedding thing is an issue in my bathroom as well...my floor looks just as awful as it did when I had a weave....dang, I thought those days were over.....Don't know what to tell ya, at least your hair is growing:grin:

Most garlic oil is mixed w/ EVOO. You could either get the capsules and open them (Sounds like a lot of work to me). Or you could make your own and have some roasted garlic to eat: http://patricklynch.net/recipes/roasted-garlic.html

Maybe the Vitamin Shoppe has it? They have a lot of things in liquid form so I'd not put it past them.

I'm a constant shedder - no matter what - but my hair still grows ... I know I shed about 100 hairs per day ... I have the nutrine garlic poo and con - but I'm gonna try the garlic pills and see if that helps a little.

I have also been experiencing what I feel is more shedding than ususual. I don't know if it's seasonal or if it's because I have been slacking on my vitamins. I am also going to try the garlic pills and some B vitamins, because I really haven't done anything radical to my hair which would cause excess shedding.

I have an actual recipe for the oil in my fotki, I will copy and paste it here. Here it is:

AGGIE'S GARLIC PRE-POO RECIPE FOR SHEDDING ONLY Jul 13, 2008 THIS RECIPE HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL TO MANY FOR SHEDDING HAIRS & FOR THIS YOU WILL NEED:

7-9 garlic cloves
2 oz extra virgin olive oil
1 plastic cap

RECIPE:

Crush the garlic cloves until very fine. Mix in with the olive oil and heat in a microwave oven for about 20-25 seconds or hot enough to apply on your scalp without getting burned. Apply mixture to scalp, put on plastic cap, sit under dryer with medium heat for 30 minutes or a little longer without heat.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

This mixture can be used 3 times a week if desired. Please keep unused product in the refrigerator in order to preserve it for about 7 days. Simply re-heat and use again. Please discard any unused portions after 7 days. I sometimes alternate this treatment with Alter Ego Garlic Oil Treatment. You should see visible results in about 3 weeks with consistent usage.

Also you might want to consider taking some Kyolic garlic supplements for maintenance. Hope this helps.

I agree Nonie. Maybe there is such a thing as garlic extract as well but I've never checked. I think I might now though.

I often say that I shed like a dog...and I've learned to live with it because it hasn't prevented me from retaining length nor has my thickness been affected.

I gave up trying to 'cure' it last year:ohwell:

Interesting, I've always been a shedder too, but recently my doctor told me that I have anemia and he prescribed me Iron and Folic Acid supplements for 30 days (it's been like 2 weeks). So maybe this condition added to my shedding problem.... I wear my hair up most of the time and haven't really noticed the change, but I definitely will after the month is over to see if the supplements helped. I know for a fact that iron deficiency causes hair loss. I would suggest seeing a doc if you notice it gets worse...:ohwell:

i went to a doctor to run blood tests but was moving apartments at the same time. i called to change my phone number and speak to the doctor, but they said i had to go in person, which is not possible right now. then the lady said if it was important and something was wrong, they would mail me a letter (i had changed my address beforehand, but didnt have a phone number yet). its been months, and no letter so i guess my bloods ok. but i do get cold very easily and have other symptoms of anemia so who knows....
