is that a bargain or what... so some of ya are in the search too and my friend just called and we got to talking bout hair. she said she went to dis salon and it was good - no overlapping and all that good stuff and she got a deep conditioning too! and of course looked fabulous!
could this be for real! i think dats a great price, what ya think?

- im tempted to try that place - gona get details

According to the thread I posted a few days ago, the $60 price is within the lower range for a relaxer NYCchild.

lunalight7 $35 is great! For the benefit of those in the Bronx or NYC area, what is the name of this salon and stylist(s)?

I think that's a great price as well.

I also pay $35 and I go to a salon in Harlem. It is a Dominican salon..Great stylist..

NYCchild, I think you should check that stylist out..Perhaps a consultation..

Your signature is great by the way..

A & J Salon on the Grand Concourse at 184th Street. My stylist's name is Herman. You have to protect the length of your hair with conditioner or oil or something when you go for a touch up because he has a hard time not getting relaxer all over your hair. Other than that, he's the BOMB. Its a Dominican salon but he is from South America. He always does a protein treatment after each touchup. I think that's why my highlighted relaxed hair has maintained its length. Now that I have had a regimen for three weeks, Im hoping to see growth.

I pay $45 at my Dominican Salon uptown around 152nd&Brdwy when my sister can't do my hair. I've been going there for 5 yrs and all the girls are trained to do the same work. Ask for Sara who runs the show. 212-283-9077.

I pay 45 but after the last experience i am looking for someone who will listen to me and not force me to do treatments i dont want to do. where in nyc are you people getting your hair done? i dont need a touchup but it would be nice to have a list of places and prices. i feel like i just getting my feet wet with this salon hunting. after going to a salon for more than a decade with a stylist who felt she could say or do whatever she pleased now i find stylist who dont really listen. i NEED HELP!!

God bless you all.

I go to Essential Style Unisex on Amsterdam Avenue (betw. 145-146 streets), on the downtown side. The owner and head stylist is Amparo..She is Dominican. Her staff is also very nice and attentive and they do hair just as good (from what I saw of the other clients)..

With such affordable and positive recommendations, maybe a page on the board should be dedicated to good salons by area. Just a thought.

We have the Salon Review discussion page..But we should probably post there more..I'm guilty of not doing so..I never do..

Maybe I will start a thread...

Re: salon listing

The Salon Review Page is a great place to start this list CarmenRose! I am sure it would help those searching for a reliable salon and stylist to try. All price ranges welcome as the goal is hair health and length!

Re: salon listing

I started the list for New York..I haven't posted on it yet..As well as another thread telling others to post for their locations..I hope people actually post on it..

Re: salon listing

I fergat all about this post! Thanxs for reviving it. I did discuss my experience at the nyc meet up but here goes.

I got there on time 9:30am, Yolette was late
frown.gif
but i decided to wait. I had to (I travelled from Long Island for this!!).

I was given a coat/overall to put on to protect my clothes. She got in at 10am - she thoroughly based my scalp and i got no burns and she did not overlap!!!. (she kept asking if i was burning anyways
smile.gif
i was feeling a little tingles here and there but i decided to let it go on. When she washed out the relaxer - Design essentials (never used this b4 or heard of it) i got no burns or sensitive scalp or anything - i have to say i was amazed. I was even expecting to have some scab a day or 2 after - nothing zilch nada!!
clap.gif

After she washed out the relaxer, i thought she was gonna deep condition - BUT!... instead she mixed it with the Colorshines which i had requested. i thought this was really weird cause she didnt put me under the dryer at all. I sat and read and had tea
smile.gif
for 30mins then she washed it out. my hair and scalp was in heaven i tell ya.
smile.gif

Flora a Puerto rican lady did my roller sets (bad ass i tell ya) like you would not believe. I was on cloud nine. My hair looked and felt so good.

Yolette blew out the roots a little on cool setting and styled me. (i asked her if roots can go straight on cool and she said yes, she said she dont know why they have to use such intense heat at the dominican salons) ???

The only drawback.
She tried to sell me some FRENCH hair products esp. the conditioner - she said that is what she used in my hair. it was 28$ for a 10oz jar it was blank - no label or ingredients. when i asked what the ingred. either she didnt know or some'n - she said 'its very good stuff from Paris'. I said "ok you obviously bought these white jars to package out of the original Tub which would be large - so can i see the original Tub"? i dont remember exactly what she said - but it was along the lines of 'i wouldnt try to sell u garbage like what they sell in the Beauty supply stores', 'this stuff is straight from Paris'!!

so anyways... i didnt buy it!! i thought she was odd to do this.

Overall.
I would recommend her and did. I would only go get relaxers from her, she doesnot overlap and my hair looked great. I would however, take my usual Affirm to use. Her shampoos are $50 so..... ferget it!! I would definately request Flora to do my rollersets next time again.
She had no special advise to give me, just oil my ends and buy the French stuff and stop buying the garbage in the beauty supply - not even mizani she likes!!????

she wanted to trim - but i said no and she did not push me -i like that!!

hope this is ok here - ill put it also in reviews.

Re: salon listing

CarmenRose,

I saw the threads you started on the Salon Discussion Page. Thanks!! I hope people will add to it!

Re: salon listing

ITs great that there is that section there but realistically people dont check there that often. most people come to this section more so it would hard to get a good amount of info when most people dont go to that section. trust it is depressing to keep paying people to do your hair and your hair doesnt come out the way you wanted. i mean why pay 45 for a touchup and you are afraid to go outside.

Re: salon listing

Thanks for the detailed post NYChild, sounds like they did a very good job. I do wonder though why they have such extremely expensive products. How on earth would they believe you'd part with so much money for a blank container? and $50 for shampoos?

They sound like they are very good with rollarsets and overall it was a good experience. Not sure why they are so anti-beauty supplies stores. Sounds like they really are instructed to push the 'mystery' products they sell.

Rite BRH it was so weird, i was looking at her like - 'are u for real do u expect me to buy this product with no wrapping and all' - hello!
blush.gif

i did ask her why she dislikes beauty store stuff - she said 'there is always some bad ingredient even in a so-called good product' and she just believes in the french products since she lived there for a long time and was trained there

i do think she is pushed. i bet she gets some kinda commission.

on another note. the least ive ever paid for a relaxer is $40. near where i live, a dominican salon but boy do they overlap. I dont think they even look when they are applying the relaxer.
shocked.gif
and they heat when they blow is horrendous

one good thing about them they hate to cut and even if u ask for a trim they inspect your ends like crazy b4 they put scissors to it
smile.gif

i went to them once to touch up and that was it. otherwise i go just for a shampoo - $20.

wow besides the pushing of the products she sounds like a good stylist. i too would be worried if someone tried to sell me something w/o ingredients or anything and just telling me its from paris. i would be like oookkkkk does that mean paris somehow doesnt have fraudulent products there?

I paid $130 for a relaxer touch up and a rinse in Cali. They have no Dominicans in Cali where I live, or at least not that I know of.
The girl is expensive, but she has my hair lookinig good I guess. Compare to the one that did it before, where I could hear the hair snapping when he was curl ironing my hair, yeah. Some people just like the money I guess.
I used to live in Ny, but my hair was weaved then, sometimes I wish I was back there. The hairdressers are the best!
