Hey ladies, just wondering...what's the difference between applying a relaxer for just a few minutes and using a texturizer and what can we expect? I'm wondering if I should make a big change. I'm ready to really add to the thickness of my hair but I know that won't happen unless I: a) ease waaayyy up on how often I relax (currently about every 2-3 months) or 2) use something a bit more gentle for taming new growth. After all, I don't even know if my new growth is really something to be "tamed" or merely something to be managed with a little moisturizer. I figure if my mother doesn't relax at all (having naturally straight hair), I HAVE to have somewhat manageable hair, RIGHT??? Why on earth is this so hard to figure out? *sigh* Help.

you can expect no change -silky straight depending on how long you leave it on
the trick is to not smoothe the hair and to time it just right you can end up
with a slightly looser version of your hair to a 3b-3c type look just depends I think den1, virtuasis, & possibly modelchick (not sure if she is a 4a?) a few others have pics in their albums try and do a search

Hi I'm 4A/B and I have a texturizer. I am mostly 4A in the back and 4B in the front. My 4A looks like 3C or 3B hair depending on if it's wet or dry and which products I put on it. It really depends on how long you leave the texturizer in and what relaxer you use. Make sure you do a strand test and keep in mind that it's better to underprocess than overprocess because you can always loosen the curl a bit but once it's straight it's hard to get any curl back. If you want to know how 4A hair can look check out the before/after pictures at the curve salon. The address is www.curve-salon.com

Okay I checked out the site....why is that dang Buttercreme do HIGH?! Have any of you ever tried it? Is it worth the price? What are the ingredients?

Texturized 3c/4a here...

My texturized 4a ringlets are loosened. Not by much, it makes it look as if it's a mix of 4a and 3c...

the 3c parts (not much 3c in my head) look 3bish.

My hair lays down instead of sticking up like a fro. It also is much softer and easier to comb through/style.

I think I have a texturizer not sure.:look: Anyway, the relaxer was left on for 10 minutes and smooth with her hand. When my hair is wet it is wavy if I leave s- curl in it it drys in waves. It does not really curl. If it dries without the s-curl then it is plain ole frizzy, actually it looks like there was no chemical apply. If I set my hair it dries straight. The best thing about my hair is that I can really extend my relaxer to months and there is not a sharp difference between my hair and the 10 minute relaxer hair.;) Hope this helps.

Ahhh, thanks for all of the info. I'm considering using those products that the curve salon sells as well. Goodness, $48 for the buttercreme?? *sigh* My husband gasped--literally. I wonder if there are any DC salons that do the silkener??? I haven't even heard of it before this curve salon...

Thanks again!

I'm 4a/3c...and my 4a sections with the texturizer(relaxer left on for short period of time) looks more like 3c--I don't loosen the curl that much. Feel free to take a peak at my page...

I did take a peek and I love it. I'm aspiring to pretty what you've got going on--thickness! I'm really considering the texturizer. Sometimes, it's overwhelming to consider all of our many, many options!

I think we would all appreciate more thickness, as opposed to stick straight but very frail strands. I just got a "texturizer" or a perm left on for only 10 mins. My edges are still curly, but not rough looking. The nape is stick straight though, it is usually on the straighter side naturally. The crown is slighly curly/kinky,but loose and easy to comb through. No thinning hairline though. This is what I like best.

Just to be clear, most of us here are using relaxers not texturizer kits to texturize our hair. Products are the same the method & relaxer strength is different. Typically it's done w/a mild relaxer and isn't worked like a full relaxer, b/c the goal isn't to make the hair straight, but lengthen the curl (b/c u wanna keep it!). Exposure time (to me) alone doesn't determine texturized v. relaxed. If I leave mild relaxer on my hair for 10 mins it isn't going to do what a super would in that same amount of time or even a regular for that matter.

My advice is never 'expect' anything when texturizing b/c you never know what you are going to get. I catergorize my hair as 3c/4a, but I have that really "soft" hair that lacks coarseness thought it's still S patterned. I have a range of textures due to texturizing and my hair still doesn't look like what I thought it would (based on seeing other ppl here), but it's cool b/c hair is unique. It has given me alot more options and tons of flexibility, plus I get to rock big arse hair when I'm ready ;) .

Thanks for the imput Sengs. You are one of the texurizer pros.

The relaxer used on my hair the last time was a mild relaxer and it was left on a shorter amount of time than normal. I think the combination of those two things caused the result to be still patterned or texurized, but not so much tangled and frizzed out.

My hair is like yours I guess, 3c4a, soft (except for the temple area) but smaller sized coils(some pen spring, some the circumference of a Sharpie or magic marker) as apposed to looser quarter or half dollar screws.

The texturizer made the coils looser and "combable", but they are still very visable and my new growth is still slightly puffy as opposed to laying straight.

@Mel: Please, I am no expert. Especially since I plan on 'correcting' AGAIN. Your hair does sound very similar to mine, but whenever I looked @ your old album I classified you as a 3c-b, never considering the relaxer. :p Anyhoo, I think being texturized and not fully relaxed makes stretching relaxers so much more managable. I understand ppl who relax every 5-6 weeks b/c those roots ain't nothin' nice :nono:. W/a texturizer you notice, but you can manage. Plus I just tried the pulled ponytail airdry method and fell in love w/my texturized hair all over again! It's blowdry and iron straight w/no direct heat!!! :yay:

That's why I try hard not to classify my hair using Andre's system. Cause I don't know what I'm doing.

hey model what texturizer do you use?
And those who have a texturizer...did you cut off the relaxed ends before texturizng?

I use Elasta QP relaxer in regular strength to texturize. I leave it on for like 5-10 minutes--depending on how I'm feeling....

If you gradually switch to a texturizer and the relaxed ends are straight--I would think that it would look better to chop of the relaxer. My hair has never been bone straight from a relaxer so I was able to hold on to my relaxed ends and trim them gradually...

Oh,and thx for all the compliments!!

My texturized 4a curls looks like 3c when wet, i have to leave mild relaxers on for 25 minutes to achieve this look.

Thanks Den, beaUtiful pics!

Modelchick, one day I aspire to have your curls. I am still on the fence as to weather I want to go all out curly (as in big chop), or just have texturized hair that I blow press out until I get my texturized hair to your legnth.

yea melodee i feel you girl...
im not too sure im brave enough to chop it all off at once...
im most likely going to texturize until i get to around model's length then cut....her curls are soooo pretty =)
goodluck!

I have 4A/4B hair I believe according to the hair chart. I think that my hair has two different textures because I realize that the front and the back my hair is much softer than the middle and sides. I had to do the big chop because my relaxed hair got damaged and I was just tired of the unhealthy hair so I decided to start all over and I really don't have any regrets. My hair is in a much better state. Having short hair doesn't really bother me because I still look cute and when I want a different look I wear my wigs. I will be wearing my wigs until my hair grows back but I definately won't be neglecting my hair in the process. Hopefully one day I will get to the length of Modelchick's, Den1's and the other ladies here with long texturized hair. You guys are truly an inspiration for me:) .

I used a Designer Touch texturizing mild relaxer to texturized my hair. The instructions stated that the relaxer should be smoothed so I did smooth while relaxing and also that it should be left on for 25 minutes. When my hair is wet it looks curly like 3B/3C but as my hair grows out it becomes wavy.

I don't think I will be going back to relaxer anytime soon. My hair is now manageable, thick and growing back in a healthy condition. I am just loving the texturized world. You can wear your hair straight one day and the next day you can be curly Sue.

Good luck in whatever decision you make;) .

You could try using some curl activator gel, a good leave in conditioner, some Elasta QP mango butter along with some essential oils and your good to go.

please don't buy the curve products.... u can make a generic potion w/ mango butter and beyond the zone noodle head.....also paul mitchel hair sclpt lotion w/ citre shine making waves works like it too
