I think that you are a thick head of 4b, could be wrong.
I just want to clarify that I started this thread, because so many of "us" do want to disassociate from having nappy, kinky, coily hair.

Heck, I have no clue WHAT type of hair I have; I just know it ain't straight, it needs to be relaxed and it's healthy. So, I'm praising God and pumping my hands in the air, cuz I'm not bald ;)

Well I am glad as well that I have a thick head of hair!! My mom has very thin fine hair and I am glad that I am blessed to have this head of hair!!!

@Webby and Sweetpeadst

I can't figure out either of you ladies hair type by looking at your pic...and since both of you ladies are relaxed I think you should look at you pre-relaxer pics. It's much easier. The pre-relaxed pics must me pics of your hair 5yrs or over. They say that the texture/grain or whatever you want to call it sets in at around 5. The only thing that can change is, as we get older is that our hair may get coarser or thicker. Also, the difference between natural 4a and 4b hair is that 4a is tightly coiled and when stretched has a definite “S” pattern. Some S’s may be looser and some may be tighter. Type 4b doesn’t have a definite coil(it may coil some) it has more of a definite “Z” or zigzag pattern.

Also, in order to determine your hair type is accurately you most have 1 inch or over of new growth. IMO, that still not enough, for some reason the relaxed strands cause the new growth to curl tighter. Webby, when I was relaxed my hair looked similar to yours. I thought sure that I was a 4a too. For some reason my new growth curled tighter when I had 1 or even 3 inches, but the more new growth I got the looser my curl pattern became. Call it scab hair or whatever.

I've decided to start my own thread using scanned pages from Andre's book on hair typing. I'm no hair typing guru...trust me I just pull out Andre's book. I've started my own thread because the other thread has gotten too long for some to still be confused.

Hope that this helps ladies!:)

tru, it was so kind of you to reply so thoroughly. You are a dear :)

I have learned what my hair, regardless to the specific type, needs to flourish. When I was younger and knew less about my own hair, I was more concerned about type. Now...I just focus on what works on my hair and what helps it to grow, make sense? :)

Thanks Tru!!!! But I don't know and I really don't think I will ever find out! So I don't care about the typing thing anymore!!!

4A/B in the house!!!

I love love love my thick, coily, spongey hair. It does not need or want to be relaxed. It loves being natural and it loves water, conditioner, oils, being braided up and being left alone as much as possible.

4A & 4B hair is the bomb! If I could kiss my hair I would! I wouldn't trade the hair God gave me for any other kind of hair. I don't want it to be thinner, wavier, curlier or even to have less shrinkage. I don't know if ya'll heard me but I love my hair so much!!!

You must have Indian in yo family....

I am napptastic as well! I've given up on hair typing, it truly doesn't matter because products either work for me or don't. I've tried products based on 3 & 4 types and usually most of those products don't work anyway. :ohwell: So for me, hair typing has been pretty useless.

Ok, you all are trippin because in my experience type 4 hair is a lot of work. It takes me a good hour to shampoo and condition my hair because it is so thick and dense. And then another hour or two to comb it out and braid it so it won't tangle back up. If I could wake up tomorrow and have softer, less tightly curled hair, I can't say I would be mad.

Girl, don't be fooled. HAIR, period, is work. My neice has fine, cork screw curls, can't do anything with it, because it tangles. She's too young to get a mild relaxer, so she has nothing but curls. Her mother has straight hair, again she has to fight tangles, trying to get a comb through it, trying to blow dry it.

Believe me, there aren't too many women alive, regardless of their hair length or texture, who don't wish they could find an easier way to manage ;)

4a checking in! :yay:Shortly after my BC I learned that my hair is much easier to manage when I don't try to comb it... :look:
..And considering how lazy, er, um...low maintenence I am, eliminating steps is always a good thing :yep:
