the first one is the after right? if so it looks good enough to me. I agree with Pook, you should wait until your touch up to cut anymore

personally, if it were my hair, i would cut a little bit more off to make it completely even, because i'm all about the aesthetics, i live for the present, and i like wearing my hair out. :yep:

however, if you're going to be protective styling a lot, then there's no need. even though your ends are uneven, that doesn't mean they're necessarily damaged. it might even be the way your hair grows out, and who knows? it might just "even itself out" in the long run. just wait until after your next texlax to really assess the situation.:yep:

I remember reading in Chiroco's fotki that her hair grows (during which time, her ends look a little thin), then thickens up, so she doesn't cut her ends as often. How long did you see through ends? I agree with the other ladies though. Also, I notice your hair was partially up in the photos, will the hair match up?

I would wait until the next texlax before I cut any more.

I'm also gradually cutting off thin ends. In fact, I was just at the Hair Cuttery last week for a trim. I told the stylist that I planned on coming in once a month to get 1/4 inch trimmed off, and she actually recommended that I trim no more than once every couple of months. :yep:

i agree, im a sucker for blunt even ends...since you are a couple of weeks post i would wait for my next relaxer before i cut again

I know that 6 month stretch attributed to my thin ends. My hair wasn't like this before... now I feel like I have to start over :(

Thank-you ladies!!! I'm definitely going to do protective styling and see what it looks like on my next texlax.... then go from there. I was tempted to go back to shoulder length and start from scratch.

I know what you mean. In my case, I think my previous stylist did a number on my ends with her marcel irons and super-hot flat iron. I also think she failed to neutralize parts of my hair properly around a year ago. Oh well, onward and upward . . .

If the first pic is the end result, I definitely wouldn't cut anymore. It looks like you have it all evened up now.

My hair does have a period where it will be thin for a few months and then begin to grow in. But this was really dramatic.. I know it has a lot to do with my improper detangling technique when I texlaxed after my 6 months stretch. My hair has only looked like this when I wasn't taking care of it :( The pic of my hair half up is the first part that I cut. That was the real problem area.. but after I cut off like 3 inches it made the rest of my hair looke really thin. And I could have been totally paranoid since I just trimmed like 2 months ago. Here is a link to my youtube video that shows my 6 month stretch results. Which is what motivated me to cut in the first place.

Thank-you La Mosca :)

Well it depends on how you normally use your hair. I don't like how it looks like to use it down, but if you use it in a bun or in a ponytail i think you are ok.

Yeah I don't like that thin patch in the middle. The only way I could hide it would be to curl the ends. But i'm a protective style kinda girl so i'll put it away until my next texlax. And if I need more time I may put it away for 6 months and then see what my next plan of action is going to be. Thank-you Taina :)

Your hair looks much thicker after the trim. I agree with everyone that suggest you wait until after you texlax before you cut anymore. My hair also broke off/ thinned out much like yours after a very long stretch. Like you, I did a self trim, I then waited for my relaxer touch-up before I trimmed anymore. Unfortunately, I didn't take any before pic's of the initial damage, but here are pic's of the after relaxer trim (2 months after first trim).

I would personally cut in a U shape. I think it looks weave-ey straight across like that BUT please don't cut before your relaxer. Some hair spots may stretch out more than others, and you'll have uneven hair if you trim before your relaxer. It happened to me, and I made the problem worse grr!

Thank-you Charm!! That made me feel a lot better! If my hair looks anything like yours after all this I will be happy! :) You have beautiful hair!!

I think the cut is good enough for now especially since you will be PS. Wait until your next touch up to access the situation. It may look a little better then and you can just trim little by little as it grows.

:look:This is what I suspected when I first saw your photos. It doesn't look like your hair is thin (as hair grows in stages) it looks like you had something happen to cause breakage in the back center of your hair. I went through something very very similar (as in the same location on my head) and my hair is just now recovering; this happend more than a year ago. The hair in that section isn't as long as everywhere else on the rest of my head but it has grown out about six inches and my hair looks thick in the back again. Because I rarely wear my hair straight I decided not to do a dramatic cut and have just let it grow out.

I think you did a really good job of evening up the back and unless you plan on wearing your hair down and straight a lot I don't think you need to trim anymore. Even if you plan on wearing it down you may be able to get away with no futher trimming right now if you wear it curled. Unless their is splitting I don't think trimming is necessary and keeping the length makes it easier to wear a lot of protective styles like buns.

And as a side note: THANK YOU FOR SHARING! Seriously, it's rare to see someone have a set back, have them take the time to take photographs of the incident. I think this was a really good post and an infomational thread despite your loss. Thank you again and HHG. I'm sure it will thicken back up in notime.

Don't start over. That see thru area looks like pony-tail damage. I had that and after I became fully texlaxed it went away.

I had the same thinning/breakage in that area, and I think it was (for me, anyway) caused by rollersetting and/or too-tight ponytails. I know, rollersetting is supposed to be good for your hair, but in my case, I have had better retention air-drying and occasionally blow-drying, and I no longer have that "hole" in the back center. Too bad, because I was probably APL in the thicker areas and to get it cut to almost neck length. But it's growing now, and very healthy. HTH.

Being honest.... you initially cut WAY too much of as seen in the first pic.

Now im not a fan of the cut, I not saying that it is the worst I have seen. I am saying that If I went into a salon and left with your end result I would be mad..... Please dont take this wrong You asked for honesty and I feel I would be doing you a disservice if I told you it looked great.

With that said, I do not suggest you cut more. Committ to protective style for the next couple of months to allow the cut to grow out.

As some ladies said before look into what is causing your thinning whether it be detangling, heat or pony tail position. And spend some time nuturing your hair.

For styling options If you decide to wear your hair out use a textured style like a braid out or twist out. or it you want a straight look just curl the hair. These styles will camouflage that thinning in the back

I think that your current cut is good for now. Just watch your progress, if your ends still look thin months from now, you may need to do a more drastic cut.

I went through something very similar with my hair. I continued to dust my ends but, my problem area never really filled in (crown to nape... middle section). My first cut was about 2.5/3 inches. The second one (5 months later) was like 6/7 inches (basically starting all over)!!! My only regret was that I hadn't done it sooner when I first noticed the thinning.
