I attempted to straighten my hair for the first time since my BC yesterday...My ends are all poofy & I need a trim, but I'm happy with the length I've gained & retained

You don't need a trim, you just need a new technique. That technique is called the comb chase method of flat ironing. I could never get my ends straight and continued to cut my ends at the beginning of my natural hair journey b/c I thought my ends were split or damaged. My hair looked exactly like your flat iron pic. The way you should know ur ends are fine is-- look at how healthy they look in your twists, shiny and plump...they are fine. See this video for the comb chase, its the only thing that straightens my ends when i flat iron (u run a small tooth comb chased by your flat iron): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwpZmTFLv6g&feature=related Oh, and press the plates down tighter to distribute more heat

I was attempting to do the comb chase method but I think I need more practice with it. And I also had my flat iron set relatively low (between 320 & 370 on my FHI Platform, because I'm so afraid of heat damage, even though I used 2 different heat protectants). Next time hopefully I'll be better with the comb chase method.

Yeah, your heat was pretty low. It took me a couple to times before I got the technique down, so you're right, it takes practice. Now I have it down so well I get my hair too straight, i mean bone straight. With that, I stopped flat ironing altogether until I find a happy medium.
