I have been getting alot of questions lately in regards to my experiance with BKT. :nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono:
its been a year since I first had it done. Sorry ladies but I would not take the plunge again. :perplexed
I honestly dont think the iron has to be set at 450 degrees to set the product in. With that said the passing the iron over your hair ten times is suicide.!!!!!!!!!!!
My hair looked good the first two months . month three I noticed before I went back for another treatment that my hair strands were begining to peel. Yes P E E L ladies. Evenvtually all where the BKT was applied my hair strands began to look like the were exploding. I bought the coppala upkeep products and in all honesty even though I have cut have of my hair off mostely were the BKT was applied i still use them they are really good.

If I could turn back the hands of times I would have probally still tried the product but requested for my stylist to run the iron down my hair shaft one time real slow in my opinion thats all you need.

If you have already done this process CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION!!!
Good luck girl
the first severaql pictures are right after my bKT the las one is my thin frail hair that in nursing back to health.

do you think the peeling was the bkt coming off? or could you see the actual cuticle layers of the HAIR comin off?

Sorry for your poor experience. I had an interest, but it was brief thankfully. I do not think I could do the upkeep, just too lazy. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting. I have never heard of an experience like this with BKT. I really curious as to what caused this to happen.

Wow im so sorry to hear this cuban . you'll get back your healthy locks in no time . i was tempted to try it , but i am scared of all that heat . i use henna anyway and that works for me . (hugs) to you cuban ! thanks for givin another side of bkt

That's horrible. I'm so sorry that this happened to you.:nono:

Are you natural or relaxed? Were you not conditioning? There are a few threads about whether or not to still condition with BKT but it seems you answered those.

How were you styling your hair between treatments? I am really curious as to why you think your strands "peeled" & "exploded"? Or do you attribute the damage to just the initial treatment at 450 degrees?

I probably would have had the same experience if I would've used the iron at 450. I usually follow directions to a 'T' but I used a flatiron back in the day at 450 degrees and my hair hit the floor INSTANTLY. I didn't go over 425 on my hair and about 400-410 around the edges I also didn't swipe more than 5 times.

Next time I BKT I'm following Socali's advice and I'm not going over 370 degrees and I'm oinly swiping my hair twice.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, it sounds like the heat needed to be modified for your hair especially if it's fine.

I am pretty sure i was the first person on this site to take the BKT plunge. Every one may not have a bad experiance. However i would be doing my sisters a disservice not to tell the flip side.Okay im going to try and answer all the questions. I think that BKT is a wonderful thing. The application is were the problem comes in. Even though he used an ample amount of product it is not possible to coat every strand throughly from root to tip. I mean like on a moleculer level. Passing the flat iron over my hair shaft ten times at 450 is what did it. The act of baking the product into your hair still bakes your hair. It just shines and looks healthy untill that product wears off. What i am saying is . It wasnt noticable for the first several months. Eventually you will see it. I do not use direct heat . I pre poo , poo, pre con and condition and rollerset every saturday. I take care of my hair like you would your infant. I think that is why i have been able to salvage what i could. I keep having to chop though. The constant breakage and shedding has made my hair terribly thin. It may not appear that way but i used to have alien thick hair . When I say that my strands were looking like they exploded I mean when i looked at individual strands. I could see the folicle seperating and fraying up the hair shaft like it was exploding from withen. (Real serious damage) I am currently gracing APL I would have been almost bsl without my BKT set back.

OMG that is SOO much HEAT! There was NO WAY I was doing that to my hair. Even swiping it 5 times was scary enough and I won't do THAT again either. Did you do your own or have it done professionaly? I know SouthernTease said her stylist told her 450 was too much for ethnic hair and they modified the temp accordingly. It sounds like you would've had a great experience if they would've used 2 swipes at about 390-400 degrees. :yep:

Just to follow up on one of the comments. I think if you lower the dail to maybe 325 and only swipe onceor twice at the most real slow. BKT could be a great thing for you. ITS ALL IN THE APPLICATION LADIES BE CAREFUL.

I had it done professionally. And im in agreeance ith you completly once through would have done just fine.

I am curious about your post-BKT regimen.

I had one done in early April, did a touchup about 5-6 weeks after because I've had a ton of new growth and was a good 8 weeks post on my last relaxer. I got the first one done professionally, and did the touchup myself. I bought a flat-iron that goes to 450, but kept it to 400 or less for my touchup. I mainly co-wash during the week, and shampoo about once a week. I haven't had any issues so far..

Girl, you are scaring me right now because that is exactly what I did when I applied my BKT yesterday!

I am sorry this happened to you!!!

I am not surpized though....

That much heat - can destroy our strands over time.

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. I just didn't trust the process to a stylist myself.

I found that I only needed to do 3 or 4 swipes to get the nice shinny soft effect. I made sure every single strand was coated without a doubt. I was very anal about the way, I put the product on the top and the bottom of the section and then combed through and took extra care to concentrate on the ends. My product instructions had it sit on the hair for 20 minutes to absorb through the cuticle.

It could be about technique. If the stylist didn't take the care to coat every strand, I could see that problem occurring.

I plan to condition well and use keratin conditioners as well as moisture in between treatments.

Thanks for the heads up about that.

I'd be ready to sue over this. This kind of damage should not have happened with a professional application.

Although I had BKT done at a salon, both times, here again is further proof that it's better to DIY since nobody will care for your hair as well as you.

I have not noticed any damage from my BKT. I plan to have BKT done again....but I may just do it myself going forward.

OP. I think it is the combination of your hair being relaxed and high heat.

My first bkt was done professionally by a white woman who didn't know how to do black people's hair. My hair was tow the hell up due to her not knowing how to blow-dry my hair, section it off appropriately, etc. She did my hair at 450 degrees and ten times. I experienced no damage besides the mechanical damage from her not knowing how to handle ethnic hair. After I washed my hair, my hair got better and better. I attribute this to me being 100% natural at the time. Anyway, the next week, the lady did my sister's hair with our recommendations how to section, blowdry, etc. our hair. My sister had no damage to her hair when it was done. OP, I do think having a relaxer combined with the extreme heat probably did your hair in.

This is good information for all the ladies considering BKT to know. Were you relaxed bone straight when you received the treatment? I think the condition of the hair prior to the treatment will dictate the proper temp and number of passes with the iron when getting the treatment.

The other thing to consider is how to condition the hair after the service. OP, I'm not saying this applies to you, but some of the information about how to condition the hair after the treatments is somewhat unclear. Most product companies suggest we use their products. I plan to use products that contain keratin. And I plan to use moisture as well.

Oh no! Eyebrow is now raised. I was hoping...we'll see in a few months...I'll access whether to do the bkt then or not. I know there's tons of good reviews too...so I'll keep my eyes open.

I already knew that the coating would peel away from the hair, but didn't know if that peeling took some of your own cuticle with it.

Sort of reminds me of getting your nails done, they look pretty and strong while treatment is on, then weak and flimsy after it comes off. Would you agree, Cubanit?

IMO it makes sense that if the coating is baked into/onto your hair with high heat, then when it starts peeling off it will definitely take some of your cuticle with it.

Wait a minute, did you have a relaxer before you did the BKT? Is it possible that the relaxer + BKT is too much chemicals?

Actually, they say BKT is best on people who have had relaxers or are colored because their cuticles are more porous and therefore it's easier for the BKT to "take".

^^^From what I read, it is better to have a relaxer and do BKT so that should not have been the problem.
I'm sorry this happened to you, Cubanit and thanks for posting this disturbing info.
I will definitely keep a better eye on my ends now.

You know that makes perfect sense.

I'm sorry this happened to you and I appreciate you giving another side to the BKT, because there are ladies that want to take the plunge and they will be able to make an informed decision if they hear all sides.

Okay im answering questions? Before i got the treatment my hair was in top condition. I am a healthy hair nazi trust me. If you read about the treatment it says that it is actually more effective on chemically treated hair because it supposedly fills in the the gaps in the haIR FOLLICLE ON A MOLECULAR LEVEL THAT ARE CREATED BY (sorry about the caps)chemical processes. Actually there used to be some debate as to wether it would even be effective on natural hair. I used the entire coppola line of maintance products and like i said the products were actually really good. I wasnt that when the product peeled of my hair it reverted beacause the product doesnt peel off your hair. My hair was peeling off itself!!!!When i looked at a stain of my hair i could see it fraying at several differnt points on a single strain . i looked like my hair was expolding literally from withen. I wish i could find a hair that still has some damage so i can take a picture. im sure there is still some in here some where. i ve been chopping like crazy.:wallbash:
YOU KNOW WHAT JUST DAWNED ON ME WE ARE EMBALMING OUR HAIR!! so i guess the process makes it look good on the outside but its something funky on the inside ya digg.
