Getting a Relaxer while in braids? Huh??

Okay let me preface this post that I am NOT the one doing this and am NOT looking to relax my hair!

Okay moving along, earlier today I was doing a friend of another friend's hair. Anywho, she specifically asked me to cornrow her hair into at least 10 or more braids going straight back. No problem there right?

Well after I'm done, she pays me for doing them and says "Now I can go get my hair permed!" Ummmm, what??????:perplexed

Here's how the convo went down:

Me: Wait a min, if you're going to get a relaxer put into your hair then why'd you get your hair braided then?

Her: Because I can't perm my hair when it's all out and about.

Me: (looking :perplexed at this point) I'm not understanding the concept, explain this one to me please.

Her: Girl please, I been doing my hair like this for years now.

Me: But how are you getting a relaxer while you're wearing braids though????

Her: Well I get it braided up since I can't part for nothing, and I just slap the perm on the outside of the braid on my nappy roots, then I wash it out. Much quicker this way!! So thanks for doing my hair girl, see ya soon!!

Me: Ummmm, okayyyyy later! I'm STILL looking :perplexed

Now I've done a search and I see nothing on this subject at all. I see threads about relaxers before braids or vice versa, but nothing about getting relaxers while wearing braids! Am I late to the game or does anyone here actually do this??

Huh....say what?! Applying a relaxer WHILE IN BRAIDS...never heard of such nor would I attempt :perplexed:nono:

kblc, that's what I'm saying! I wouldn't do such a thing like that to my own hair back in the day, nor would I do it for someone else. I just don't see the concept of it AT ALL!!

A former co-worker did this. Her results were awful, to say the least. I warned her, but she didn't listen and her hair broke off something TERRIBLE.

OP, you did what you could...but next time, I would tell her to bring the perm to you and let YOU do it, because that's just ridiculous. Her hair probably has all kinds of different levels of processing in it.

I'd understand if she unbraided each section and applied the relaxer. Kinda like just getting you to make her parts but umm.. this seems :ohwell:

I've never heard of this. Were the cornrows done 'inward' or 'outward' (I hope this makes sense, and you understand my question)? I was thinking maybe she wants to protect her hair ends and just get straight to the roots??? But even so, I just feel like it would burn her scalp and leave her with underprocessed parts actually.

Interesting to say the least.

On the bolded, she didn't even give me time to even offer to do her relaxer for her. Her hair didn't seem to even need a relaxer, barely any NG visible, and I was able to get a comb through very easily. If there's any NG to be found it's more or less about 1/8" in the back of her head and that's it.

Her preference was to have the braids going outward, and yes I understood what you mean :) You did fine.

A user here texlaxed her hair while in mini twists and it came out GREAT. Like a permanent twistout. Does anyone remember that?

Usually it's a big no no. Cornrows really don't make sense.

Yeah, I though about the member who texlaxed like that.

But with cornrows, the hair that "needs" the relaxer probably is getting less of the relaxer that the rest of the hair.

I'm just so confused. I've seen some weird things done to hair but this :spinning:

its funny i came across this post because after my first self-relaxing experience, i decided that i will do 6 big braids prior to relaxing my hair but, instead of relaxing it with the braids in (which i have never heard of till this post), i will unravel one braid at a time and slap relaxer on it. because, it was hard to do with all my hair out and all that new growth and trying to untangle it all in the same setting. I've also decided to put the braids in the night before relaxing.

I remember. I think her name was misslolli, she had the process is her fotki. It came out very nice.

So how does she get relaxer to the hair that is inside the braid? Homegirl is on some other stuff.

There was a poster here who texturized her natural hair while in twists to hold the curl pattern. I've heard of people putting perm on their roots while in braids but I wouldn't do it. But I guess whatever floats your boat. OP, what does your friend's hair look like?

... she need some help.. how was her hair though when you were braiding it? was it healthy?

No, you're not late to the game, and if so, this is one game I would loveeeee to be late for:lachen:. I would never do such a thing as to put perm in my hair while in braids. WUH THA:blush::spinning::drunk::nono: What condition is her hair in? How is she going to get the perm out of the creases of the braids:perplexed I have heard it all.

I've never heard of this, and for the life of me, I can't figure out how the braids would help in the perming process. All that new growth underneath the braids not being touched by the relaxer, and the tension of the braids on the scalp...oh my!!! I'd like to see the results from that one.
