Type 3 vs Type 4

I don't see why it would be either. Do you mean that perhaps their hair blends better with the relaxed hair so that they don't experience much breakage at the demarcation line OP?

How does one know what type their hair is?

to put it short afro hair is type four...bone straight hair is type 1.....hair with a wave is type two and more curls is type three

now the size of the curl pattern determines the grade like a,b or c.... the larger the curl (3a) the better the grade (3c)

IMO the looser the curl the easier it is to transition. every bend in a curl is a point for brakage. thus it makes sense that the tighter the pattern the more prone to breakage it will be expecially when transitioing.

i also think that texture plays along with it too. if the hair is thready or silky(in that it absorbs water easily) it would be easier to transition with because the hair will not be as prone to break because it can hold moisture more easily than a cottony or spongy hair texture.

These are just my conclusion from my observations. I dont think its necessarily as clear cut as 3 is easier than 4 though.

I'm interested to see what other people think. I don't think so with 3c vs 4a, but I could see that maybe being the case for a 3b vs 4b transitioner. But I don't know too much about hair types either.

who the heyal lied to you?

Curl size has nothing to do with hair grade.

I will be generous and assume you didn't really mean "better"

:perplexed Are you serious??

I agree with the ladies that said the looser the curl the easier the transition. I don't think transitioning is easy peezy in general, but if you are able to still rollerset your hair and it give you a more uniform straight result, I do think that that would make the change easier for you.

imho, I really think it just depends on how you are styling and managing your hair during your transition. I also think there is a lot more to ease of transitioning than "type 3" vs "type 4" hair (hair typing in itself, i really don't buy into...:ohwell:). Whether your hair is fine, coarse, thick or thin, porous, etc. will also play into how dif people manage their transitions-

I am 9.5 mo post and I have very thick, coarse, wiry hair. I wouldn't know how to begin to classify it as 3c, 4a, 4b bc I think it has elements of all those types at different spots on my head and I don't really have spiral curls to even analyze. My hair has more of a non-uniform wavy "z" pattern, which is consistent with what 4b hair is defined as, but the z pattern is large, so my hair straightens realtively easily. Braidouts are working VERY well for me as my coarse, wiry hair "locks" into the style and holds for days and the thickness makes the braidouts look larger than life. The hair kind of stays, so I don't have a problem with matting or lots of tangles. The technique of applying a lot of leave-in and sealing with a natural oil or butter (shea butter, coconut oil) also works extremely well with my hair and gives it a lot of shine. My hair is porous and eats a lot of product and still has body and movement...

These same techniques may not work as well for fine or thinner haired, "3c" ladies (might weigh it down, make it stiff, not hold the wave/curl texture from the braids, may get tangled/matted more easily, etc.) and if they didn't know what will specifically work for their hair and/or was using the way I manage my hair, they might consider their transition difficult (whereas for me, it's extremely easy ..wash once every 7-10 days, apply leave-ins/sealants, plait and let air dry overnight...)

in short, it can be just as easy or just as hard, it's all trial and error, you just have to do what is easiest and less stressful for your own hair...once you figure that out :look: and some people never do, which makes the whole process frustrating

ETA: If I had to try and classify, I would say I was closest to a 4a. My transition has been going relatively smooth with no real issues...

well how would any of you describe it without copying what someone else wrote....

Well what you were supposed to say was the tighter the curl, the further into the alphabet you go, i.e. large curl A, medium curl B, tight curl C

No it's not. 1,2,3,4 has nothing to do with grade. It just means the size of the curl. From straight to Z. You can have a course 1 or white people fine frizzy Z's that's soft to the touch.

wow, I think transitioning is just challenging.
I have 4 textures.... including 3b/c....

ETA - in terms of Grade.... all the hair I have on my head is a good grade....Because it is growing...and God gave it to me, and I could be bald - So - it is a good grade to me.... :yep:
