Baking Soda Ate My Scalp....

I dont know, I'll have to try this. I just applied the baking soda and conditioner mix directly to my hair strands before. I'll have to try the roots......if I can reach them.

Don't let my zeal stop you. I just used a lot and left it on too long.

I just used too much for too long. Use it in moderation. I'll do it again, but in much smaller portions and if not for a shorter length of time...not while asleep.

I used a lot. I just wanted to see if it REALLY could do anything and figured if 3/4 a cup didn't do it...nothing would. :lachen:

I would have been fine if I hadn't slept in it. I sleep VERY wildly and my tossing and turning caused it to scrub my scalp. I use baking soda to exfoliate, but never thought that the friction caused while I slept would do the same. One of those little details.

I may try a large concentration again, in the future...just for lesser time, or again -with no manipulation/pressure.

Don't fear The Soda!:lachen:

How is your scalp doing now mama?

I do it and I apply it to the roots with a relaxer brush. I apply it like a relaxer. I only leave it on for 10 minutes...tops. It does burn slightly and I would never leave it on longer than that.

So far, my "product buildup" (mascarading as dandruff) has been 100% better.

I tried it, but I only left it on for one hour under a regular plastic cap b/c my scalp is super sensitive and I didn't want to take any chances. For my hair, it didn't relax it or change it. All I noticed is that the new growth was softer and that my hair seemed to take longer to dry (which I hear is a good thing). Isn't baking soda a way to clarify hair anyway? I think I will do it once a week with my co-wash as a means of clarification and to soften new growth, which is good enough for me.

Sorry to hear about your scalp, but at least you got some good results:spinning:

Baking soda is the TRUTH!!! I wash my face with that AND sea salt (yes it burns slightly) and I have a perfect complexion. Also it cleans my scalp like no other, even after wearing braids for 2 months!

HOORAY for baking soda

Poor dear! That baking soda is potent stuff. It's a clean all, freshen all, and now relaxes all! LOL! Hope you're doing better!

I tried it this weekend too. I mixed 1 cup of Suave Tropical Coconut conditioner with 2 heaping tablespoons of baking soda, slathered it on my hair and left it on for an hour under a plastic cap. I rinsed it out and my hair felt very soft and moisturized. And like LaPetiteCoquette said, it did take longer to dry.

Although it didn't relax my curls, I swear the concoction smelled just like a relaxer (maybe it was my combo of baking soda and Suave coconut conditioner). Anyhoo, it gave me the chills to just smell that "relaxer smell" again. :ohwell:

Glad your scalp is kewl. Love love the BS endorsement as I am a big fan. Never had burning issues tho. Every body is different. And yes, I have left on overnight mixed with DC in the proportions you stated.

ITA. How is your scalp doing?

Thank you for your concern! It's doing just fine...and I'm not done experimenting with large amounts of BSo (Which has a ph of 8.3-9 BTW, not the 13+ of relaxers, 100 times more alkaline than blood but...hey....:lachen:).

In fact...I'll be writing a review of my results soon. They are fantastic! Stay tuned.

And yes, I'm being careful. My hair's never been softer, shiner, or more tangle free. Just pining down the exact amounts and time it takes to "process" before I do a formal review.

oh wow, I for one am relieved, I was scared it did damage!

Heeelllooo nuuuurrrrrseeee!!!

Im brand spanking baby fresh and new to the board.... but have been patiently watching (with my frocktail lapped) for a while now. I saw this post and have been mulling it over in my mind for a while. I too mixed the hmmm about a 6th of the box of bs into my sourcream and added a squirt of lemon..... conditioner to taste and wow ... even my kitchen now looks like my livingroom... the result was smooth smooooooooooooooothhhhhe hair. (Btw i left it in for about 2 1/2 hrs and am unsure of the exact measurements) i definitely think that its a must try... what is the worst that can happen? your hair turns out like how it did before ? oh well.... :look: i love it.... question.... how often do you ladies think that this can be done?

Okay despite the your tragedy I still used alot of baking soda because I have really thick hair and its super coarse. Neway my results were good............ I used MAYO, olive oil, and Baking Soda.. I parted my scalp first then took pure baking soda fully concentrated n applied it right into my scalp then I rubbed it in. Afterwards I did the same thing to my mayo, baking soda, and olive oil mix. Afterwards I used my Alta Ego shampoo as a stabilizer.

Mind you I haven't permed my hair in about 3 months.

Final Results!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SEXY soft textured hair...................

I love it.. Hopefully my dandruff will be gone for GOOD..

This is interesting, I would just assume the baking soda would be very drying yet nobody is saying that.

I did this last week on a lark. Through the use first of yogurt conditioning for several months and then the use of aloe vera on my hair daily since January, my curl pattern has loosened a great deal and stayed loose and my shrinkage is less than 50-65% (in other words a great deal less) than what it used to be. Usually I research something half to death before I will try, but I was completely spontaneous with this experiment.

I mixed two tablespoons of BS with some Cabellino del Caballos condish and left on for 40 minutes. I got very aggressive scalp tingling and warmth to the point almost of wozziness so I only left it in for 40 minutes as I was trying for an hour. It did not burn though at all. It relaxed the remaining curl pattern I would say another 25% at least or more. I was really surprised how much and did not post earlier because I did not take a before picture, so an after picture was useless.

My hair was soft, very strong, fluffy and tangle-free -- very elongated "s" shape, not a coiled "s" shape where one can pulled it and it will spring back. My hair a week later is still very strong and very soft and relaxed. However, all week long my hair did absorb moisture quicker during the day than it usually does, but it did not dry out. I have less moisture at the end of the day, but my hair is still soft and strong, if that makes any sense. In other words, my hair still feels nice, smooth, conditioned and not at all dry at the end of the day.

I'm thinking of trying BP to relax my natural curls a bit.

My hair is color-treated, so should I use it for a shorter amount of time?

Also, for those who do the BP mix regularly, do you always put the mixture over all your hair, or new growth only?

WOW, I'm so glad my kitchen hijinks brought some good!

I'm still using B.So and I'm pleased with it. For me it just reduces frizz and helps DCs take better. :yep: And no, I have no scalp irritation.

I guess I should say I'm not natural now? Or perhaps I'm hurting for a relaxer? j/k :lachen:

Be sure to keep up moisture with this though. I haven't noticed dryness and I see others haven't either but it's good to watch out for.

Off topic: Whoo! My second 1-star thread! I'm officially special times two!

Oh Lil golden lamb I'm so glad you are okay! I"m glad you like the results.

Can wait to see the pix.

(I had a blond moment. I was thinking "why the hell are they putting Bull S. on their heads and where on earth are they getting it from?") :nono:

Please don't put no BS on my head!!
:lachen::lachen::lachen: I feel so damn dumb! LOL

I did this today.

Recipe: 1/2 cup of conditioner & about 2 tbl spoon BS
Procedure: apply to dry hair for about 30 minutes or more
Result: soft hair (never had my hair feel soft this way), loosened curl pattern & more definition

This is what I found when I tried using baking soda too. I left it on for 30 minutes because I started to feel some tingling and I didn't want that to progress into BURNING :eek2: !

I tried this on 6/14 (about 2 week after my last relaxer) my scalped did burn a bit after 30 minutes but I too was laying down and I'm sure I gave my scalp a good rub. Out of fear I washed it out, DC and kept rolling. I did notice that my hair looked and felt great and immediately deem this process a stable.

Well 5 weeks later and my hair is still soft and easy to comp thru. I am now 7 weeks post and my hair has never felt this good at this point.

Today I am used littlegoldlamb's formular (it's been on my hair & scalp for 1 hour now with no burning) but I will leave it on for about 3 hours and DC after for an hours. I'm hoping this will get me away from relaxer for good. I'll report back later!

What was her formula? I was trying it today. How much Baking soda per water or conditioner?

How much did you use the first time?

Her formular calls for 3/4 cup of BSo and about 1/2 cup condish or just enough to make the BSo creamy. I used 1/2 cup BSo come to think of it.
