Korean hair salon offering "Afro Perms"

When I was in school I knew a japanese girl with a BA fro. She said they did it like a curly perm and set it on tiny rollers. She said that alot of asians chemically treat their hair. Their hair is so straight you have to break down the bond so you can curl it with a curling iron. The weirdest thing I ever saw was a korean girl buying a relaxer.
 
Wow this is interesting, but it doesn't surprise me. I work with a Chinese woman and she told me that it's still big in China to get curly perms. Since nearly everyone has stick straight hair, if your hair is radically different, you'll stand out. She also said a lot of Chinese celebrities (mostly dancers) rock the kinky hair look. She did say, however, that this trend is bigger in Korea and Japan than it is in China.

It's funny because I swear she is literally happy that I'm transitioning back to my natural hair. In fact, she is very vocal when I flat iron my hair because she can't understand why I would want (and these are her words) "straight, flat limp hair when I can have the curlies".

I think it's very cool! There is nothing wrong with it AT ALL IMO. It boils down to just having fun with hair. Hair does not always have to be a cultural / racial statement. If anything it promotes unity and respect among the races.

Even naturals like to straighten their hair once in awhile for something 'different'.

But just like those who relax they will have to learn proper maintenance for chemically treated hair. Maybe they will start a website like LHCF for Afro permed Asians.:yep:
 
Btw, I saw a book a long time ago about the history of afro hair, and I was surprised to learn that there was some treatment back in the 60's for people with straight types of hair who wanted to rock a 'fro. They even showed some white people with it.

i've seen it before and i've seen alot of koreans with dreadlocks. its pretty cool that other races appreciate our natural hair too.

This guy knows how to care for his hair-- it isn't jacked up like what I saw before.:yep: (for the most part) If it can look that good then I think it is a good thing. I was judging based on that pic of the girl but now I see the rest and I'm satisfied- I hope they have a Japanese version of S-Curl though.

His new texture is cute... I may be biased because that is what some of my hair looks like:rolleyes:
 
funnily enough, i was on another board and was going to mention this in an already existing thread. i see a lot of japanese youth doing this (in japan not elsewhere), as well as locing. i didn't know they did it in korea.
 
I read years ago about how Japanese people were hair weaves in our hair texture. I thought that it was ironic because some black women wear hair weaves mimicking their hair texture.

I think it's cool and flattering. We're on one end of the hair spectrum (curliest of curly), and they're on the other (straightest of straight), so i think that it wouldn't be unusual if either race wanted to experiment and change something about their hair.
 
Why is it that they're trying to be black with the super curly perm but some people get upset when people say black women are trying to be white when they relax?
 
I think the model looks pretty. No wonder when I go get my sushi the little man be in there skinning and grinning at me. It must be my naps :grin:
 
Next year they will be on HSN buying Maxiglide MP irons to straighten it.

Just a fad. Yall know we are the "in" thing right now.

Some of them could at least shape it up a bit or get some cornrows or something. :lol:

Thats true. But on the upside I think its cool that other ppl admire our hair so much that they wanna rock it :)

I don't see anything wrong with it either. I think we're reading too much into it.

If them wanting to nap their hair makes them "wanting to be black", then I guess us wanting to straighten our hair makes us "wanting to be white or asian." :ohwell: Isn't that some of the accusations natural hair women throw at relaxed heads?

Exactly. Everybody wants to act black until the cops come. :look: They don't really want to be black.
 
I don't think they "want to be black", but I'm sorry type 4 hair is a strong BLACK characteristic. yeah yeah, there are others but these are pretty much black hairstyles they are going after.

Most black women I know get their hair relaxed to make it more manageable and easier to take care of - not to be some other race.

Why are they making their hair nappy? Even if it is just because they like the look, WHO do you think they see having hair like that for the most mostly?

Come on. They are imitating BLACK hair styles, it is so obvious. Again, I don't think they "want to be black", but they are clearly going after hair that is pretty much identified with so many of us.

Relaxing and straightening of black hair has been going on for years and years and the issue, and even debate about it, is deep rooted. This fad of theirs? No comparison!
