I was just wondering how many of you think relaxers are good and healthy for you and your hair? I read on a previous thread I started that some women found relaxers to be healthy/good for their hair and I was curious... are there any more of you out there?

I wouldn't say healthy but neither is that slice of cheesecake I ate for lunch. I haven't had any problems and my hair's health hasn't been affected so no worries here.

I have a relaxer. I don't think relaxers are "good" for your hair. They can for some, make the hair more manageable. However, I think if they are applied properly and your hair is well taken care of, you're hair can thrive with them.

The key is to apply them properly and don't abuse them. Don't apply them all the way to the ends and don't relax every 4 weeks and expect your hair to flourish.

 Relaxers arent like vitamins or fruit :nono:

On the other thread, i think some ladies were saying that they didnt think their relaxed hair was unhealthy :ohwell: Not that the actually relaxers was healthy for their hair like a deepconditoner or that it was healthy for their body like it was benefitting them

Of course no-one is going to think relaxers are "good for them".

I dont think relaxers are good for your health
But i also dont think they are "AS BAD" as some people think.

I also think their are waaaay worse things.

ETA---the poll just seems worded for a favaroble outcome--nobody in their right mind thinks relaxers are actually "good for them"

In total agreement with this post:yep:...of course relaxers aren't healthy as in carrots and water, but I choose to use it as a texturizer instead..my hair seems to like that as opposed to bone straight:look:

ETA: AS OF 2/08. LOL! OF course I am updating this post!! I no longer use relaxers. They are No good for me !!

Honestly ...I don't think relaxers are good for hair....It takes a lot of work to keep it healthy....Neither is blow drying, flat-ironing..etc....But we do a lot of things to our hair that is not good for styles and whatever.....I love my relaxed hair!!!!

I will quote the LHCFer when I find it...

she actually said relaxers were good for her hair...

give me a minute... or day... I'll get it.

Anyway, I think I made my point... or actually ya'll made it for me

((PUSHING MY AGENDA))

It's not good for you so why do it...

We shouldn't put it in or on our body if it's doesn't add anything

to our health. Have you read Dr. Oz's book? or Kevin Truedeau.

it's like SUGAR... sugar is bad for you but nobody wants

to stop using it because it's SOO GOOD right...

Sugar is more addictive than cocaine as demonstrated

by research... someone posted it in another thread...

same thing with relaxers... they are NOT GOOD FOR YOU.

I mean how long did it take for people to get that cigarettes were bad

that High Fructose was bad, that mineral oil was bad for hair

It's like you won't know it's bad for you until something really bad happens...

until you get smacked in the face with it...

until you read the research article about African- American hair stylists having

higher rates of cancer than any other race in that profession...

That's my point.

I'm not perfect though... just want you to see it... I'm not judging... I'm one applicator brush away from a touch up myself. Not really but you know what I mean. I'm not like anti-relaxer... well maybe a little... at the very least I think women should stretch at least 12 weeks. I'm not judging... I'm not Bishop SouthernTease... do what you want but if I at least made you think twice about it... I feel I've done my part. ((DUCES  ))

:lachen:@red... girl you silly!
I agree I shouldn't use it..chemicals are carcinogens in my opinion..but yet I still texturize every 3mths:look: as well as eat sugary foods:look:.... but the key for health is moderation... Well that is my story and I am sticking with it:drunk:

Your relaxed .......When r you BCing? These are the type questions you are asking to prove a point......You do what you choose...I do know have a friend is true natural...No chemicals in hair ...she won't even you shampoos...she also does not straighten her hair by flat iron or what ever....Not her thing...She is my best friend...She does her thing...I do mine....Do we judge one another ...No....She reaches her goals one way ...I reach mine my way....Cells phone have been proven to cause cancer, make men infertile ...People still buy them...

But to say that relaxers don't make your hair healthier is not to say that relaxers are damaging to your hair. :ohwell:

BTW, there are relaxers out there that minimize damage.

Comparing relaxer to unhealthy food isnt right . You cant get addicted to a relaxer, and you cant really get severe health problems from usin a relaxer, that is unless you rub it all over your face and eyes.

Bishop southern tease :lachen:

So your point of view is you think the relaxer is something that is deadly like ciggerates, and that we are being decieved about it/being nieve/it has not yet come to people who use it's attention?

I see.

My thing is, i dont believe the relaxer is bad for black women untill someone tells me that perms and nair are just as bad for white women.

I really love when people dont relax because they want to be more healthy, but then whats the point in going and eating chemicaly loaded food and using anything other than organic hair products?

Black people need much rather worry about aids than relaxers

I'm saying do you...

I'm anti-shampoo too... well most of them...

Good point about the cell phones...

tvs too... anything electric has EMFs that are bad bad bad

but we still use it... I wonder why...

I wonder what it's gonna take for us to stop...

I really wouldn't mind going back to basics no cells,

no gas, no tv, no relaxers... living on an island...

washing my hair with fruit and berries...

no bills, no work... could be a good look...

but... until that day... relaxers are just one less thing

I have to worry about...

Brain food I love it... healthy discussion... keep 'em coming...

Yeah, natural hair is one of the last things that are going to save you/keep you more healthy IMO.
The air you breath, the soaps you use, the water you drink/use.....

On another note, SouthernTease, your natural hair does look quite nice! Do you have any before pics of ur natural hair? I mean like before u knew how to take care of ur hair, pre-LHCF days w/natural hair.

Yes goodness
Shooot sometimes i wonder if these wars are going to have us living in some sort of cave or basment, country, island, ect. and we will be back to the basics. No oil, baking soda, henna, etc none of that for your hair/body....what will we do then? :nono:

I voted for No, relaxers are chemicals and are bad for my health and hair.

I'm natural and love it. However, I'm not knocking anyone who chooses to relaxes their hair (I was relaxed for 21 years) but for me the realxers did nothing for my hair but break and damage it. No I didn't overlap, use expired perm kits, had a bad salon experience, or overprocess. For my hair, I've noticed better results with being natural and I will never go back to perming again.

The air and water are out of our control

choosing to not use chemicals on/in our bodies we can control...

if you can eliminate what you can control...

what you can't control is out of your control...

dig it...

For sure... I was a relaxed hair model for AVLON/KERA CARE. See my siggy that APRIL '07 pic is pre-LHCF. I always had healthy hair. Choosing to transition was more for my physical health rather than for the health of my hair.

At the bolded red, we do PLENTY of things that arent good for us like eating pork, not exercising, not drinking proper amounts of water, I could go on and on. Lets not just stop at relaxers.
