My sister used this combo on a small area and her hair came out a light to medium brown color...very pretty. Has anyone tried this? How would you maintain the health of your hair? I have included a picture so everyone can see how the color turned out.

TIA :)

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

I bleached my hair last weekend with the standard powder bleach and hydrogen peroxide developer combo. My hair was much lighter than your sister's though. Right now all I'm doing is oiling daily and that seems to be helping. Since I placed another color over the bleached hair, I plan on switching to sulfate free shampoo and doing a deep conditioning treatment twice a week.

Is your sister relaxed or natural? If she's relaxed, I would recommend stretching her relaxers as long as she can and not doing the mix the same day.

Hope this helps some.

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

I would be hesitant to do something like this since it is hard to control what color your hair actually becomes.

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

I wouldn't do it. You don't know what color you'll get and that combo will probably leave your hair dried out like straw. There are lightening kits available that are calibrated to give you predictable results within a certain range. If you really want to lighten I suggest you use one of those products.

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

It's probably healthier to use a store bought product if you're going to use peroxide anyway. There's no measuring and the formula would be balanced for the least amount of damage.

For an alternative lightening method, I would use honey. Andrea's Choice on YT has honey lightened hair (I don't like it) but the honey worked well.

To answer your question, I used some peroxide in my crazy middle school days. I also did a lot of other stupid stuff to my hair.

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

Get her to do a strong protein treatment followed up with a good moisturising dc. She should generally incorporate more protein into her regimen, she'll be fine

Hi, she is relaxed and usually relaxes every two months or so...thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the advice, I will get on her about the protein and dc's.

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

thank you ladies for the responses and advice and to everyone who voted. I think she is going to continue the method that she has tried already since she knows what mixtures will give her the resultsthat she wants and I will make sure she is incorporating protein and moisture into her regimen. She is more bold than me cause i'm kinda scurred to color my hair unless its a rinse/semi permanent lol:)

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

I just want to chime in; I use Sun-In to lighten my hair. I spray it all over my hair. The natural color is a dark brown, but seems to have reddish undertones. The Sun-In picks up whatever undertones you have. Similarily, you don't know what exactly your color is going to be until you have used it.

Here are the ingredients:

Water, Hydrogen Peroxide, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Extract, Hydroxyethyl Cetyldimonium Phosphate, Dimethicone PEG-7 Phosphate, Glycerin, Quaternium-80, Panthenol, Silk Amino Acids, Polysorbate 20, Fragrance, Benzoic Acid, Disodium EDTA.

Use shampoo with crushed vitamin c tablets (about 20 or so) crushed into it....leave for 2 hours. I wouldn't try peroxide/baking soda...too drying. Why not just try straight developer?

jprayze your hair looks really nice...I never heard of the product you mentioned but I look into it and suggest it to my sis.

auparavant Thanks for responding, I honestly know nothing about color and bleaching lol...it was a spur of the moment thing for her. She did some research on youtube and decided to try it.

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

This once happened to me by accident. I had a new ear piercing and used peroxide nightly to bathe it. The excess dripped on to a swatch of hair near my ear and over time it lightened to red. This was natural hair, and there was no damage or dryness at all. The lightening was gradual and since it wasn't my intention to color my hair I didn't really know it was happening until I noticed the red. It might be different if you try to lighten your hair in one treatment.

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

yes back in high school we always used to put highlights in our hair with hydrogen peroxide.

and also bleach the hair on our thighs and arms ... so we wuddnt look hairy lol

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

Yup. Used to do it in highschool. I also used lemon juice and herbs and sat in the sun. Worked just fine. My hair liked that better than actual dye.

Let me know if she tries it...You can usually find it at Wal-Mart or places like that; I've never seen it in the bss.

I've been using it so long, people think that's my natural color. I've never seen any damage from it; I do condition a lot too. :yep:

Cool...thanks girlie :)

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

I have used it. I have been told it's a healthier alternative to bleaching. I still have some highlights left in my hair. My hair didn't have any adverse affects from it. It only did a few highlights here and there, though,

Off topic....
Iluvsmuhgrass reminded me of when I mistakenly colored my hair purple by piling on JAM every single day then going to band camp and staying in the sun all day. My hair turned a deep purple that year lol.

Hmm interesting lol

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

I did it back in highschool. My hair definitely got lighter. After all of these years, my mom still thinks it was the prettiest color she has seen.

It eventually tore my hair up! It got drier and drier until it turned to straw. I cut all of the colored hair off and kept moving. I saw it coming and I really didn't care back then.

I wouldn't do it today because I'm not that carefree these days.

I used to love sun in and then couldn't find it any more. Where are you getting yours?

To get it at my local Walmart; but I have also ordered it from drugstore.com.

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

I was thirteen in Queens on my annual summer vacay to NY. My aunt had me in bible summer school and I meet this interesting girl who was mixed and had to have like 3a hair flat ironed. We became friends, we here bored and she showed me how she lighted the front tips of her hair and it was with just peroxide alone. Her hair was light brown but the peroxide made it like 3 shades lighter. I attempted to do the same but mine didn't come out as light:ohwell:

So long story short, it does lighten depending on your starting color, I guess the baking soda is to neutralize or enhance it??

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

I used to use it all the time on my natural hair when I was in my 20s. I loved the way the color came out...it was like a golden, lightbrownish red. I then tried it on relaxed hair and it destroyed it over time. Now that I'm back to natural I'm just used to keeping my hair very dark....especially with graying temples. I do consider doing again from time to time.

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

Yeah, I remember putting peroxide on my hair when I was in high school as well as dying it Auburn. All I can say is ignorance is bliss that I still had hair back then.

Re: Anyone ever use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for hair lightening/bleaching?

LOL, I did this when I was 16, long story short: my mom
wouldn’t let me dye my hair until I was 18. SOOOO to be a bit devious (and disobedient) I decided to do it myself. For a few days me and my friend (yes she was insane too:look:) sprayed a mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide and BS on my hair. I was spritzing like a crazy lady! Lol, neways my hair literally started breaking and crumbling in my hand:nono:. But hey, it definitely came out lighter................if one was trying to acheive that fiery copper look....... Once my mom realized what was going on, and I confessed to trying to dye my hair “on my own”, of course she flipped out! She then took control of my hair styles for my entire 10th grade year of school. My hair was far too damaged to save so I was forced to get a short finger curl wave doo. VERY cute if you’re a SWV back-up singer………NOT so cute when you’re a short, overweight teenager with pudgy cheeks:lachen:……… LESSON LEARNED
