I havn't gone to a salon in about 7 months. My hair is much better off for it. Its actually growing really fast. I would love to try a natural salon in a few months when my hair grows back in the front. My hairdresser did not like my hair she always wanted to straighten it. Until the perm dropped the front of my hair.....she didnt care she still wanted to keep on perming. I don't know how you perm a bald spot.....but she tried too. But i know now bring your own stuff make sure they use it and find a good hairdresser that listens to you.

Is there a way to get a stylist's license revoked? There needs to be some repercussions for some of the crap some of these lazy *** stylists pull.
I feel so bad for those ladies. You would expect someone with a license would do right.:angry2:
 
Out of curiosity OP why won't your salon press clients hair, at least they know they will be safe with you. What gives anybody the right to go and do that (add a relaxing agent) to anybody head of hair without permission and jack it up in the process. If they can't deal with thick hair then decline their services. This is madness.

Since the salon decline to press maybe you can give your clients recommendations of places to go that you trust. Thanks for enlightening us all! Who knows they may also do this to relax heads who are stretching with a lot of new growth. How horrible!

My boss doesn't press hair because after a while I guess it takes it's toll. I suggested we look into safer ways so that people aren't at risk in other places but I guess with straightening hair there's always that chance that you will damage it. Especially with clients where enough isn't enough. At my job it's health over style and she's one of those old school naturals that just doesn't see the need to straighten.

How sad. Well I hope you have intentions to open your own shop one day soon where you can provide a safe environment for all services a natural client would want. I wish you the best in your endeavours!

@ the bolded: That is just sad!

When I used to go to one salon in particular to get my hair pressed, my mother used to always say that my hair looked unusually straight, and the people around me started telling me that I looked like I had less hair. A while after I stopped going to that salon, I heard about stylists using neutralizer in the shampoo to deal with the kinks in clients' hair.

I don't know if the stylist actually used neutralizer for my hair, but I was just shocked that this sort of thing was happening at all.

It's sad to say, but I'm not shocked to hear that stylists are mixing relaxers into conditioners. Often times, the stylists are more clueless about hair than their clients. Thanks for the heads up, Nayna!
 
Thanks for the headsup! This happened to my friend when she went on study abroad in the DR but I didn't know it was going on here too!:nono:
 
This is exactly why I am a DIY'er! I use to stay in salons black and dominican,and in my experience the problem with the black salons was #1. they were more in to the styles than hair care, and #2. most dont know the difference between a trim and a cut. My issuses with dominican salons were #1. they always tried to push a relaxer on me, and #2. they use many unidentifible products! i.e. bottles and jars with no labels (which I don't trust)

... Bottom line their are some very shady salons and stylist out there, but their are also some outstanding ones that really care about their clients WANTS & NEEDS. You just have to be very cautious nowadays!
 
Wow!!! Thank you for posting this! I tell you, people are mean and sneaky. You all are so right when you say to get up and leave if people start complaining about the texture of your hair. I've learned my lesson the hard way. I've never had this same thing happen to me, but I have had stylists cut and press the life out of my hair b/c they don't know how to deal with natural hair.

oooh wee, stuff like this makes me hot. DIY for me!!!
 
I have heard of this.

additionally, I've heard of places sneaking in ammonia filled dye with rinses. My friend always gets her hair rinsed jet black at her salon and the stylist would never tell her what she was using to do it because it was a secret. She would giggle when my friend asked.

I loved the shine and hue of her hair & would ask what brand & my friend would only see the bottle of Jazzings in Blue Black so she thought that's what she was using. Her hair started drying and breaking and one day she figured out the stylist would add ammonia dye to the rinse and never told her.

They do this, but dont give you tips on how to take care of the damage they just slid in your hair.

Quite frankly, I'd sue.

Oh my goodness! You work in Brooklyn- I live in Brooklyn! This is scary that something like this is happening so close to home. I don't know when the next time I step in the salon will be, but if or when I do, I am bringing my own products!! :perplexed

Here's the deal. I'm a junior stylist in a natural salon that doesn't straighten hair. So a few of our clients just opt to go elsewhere to get their hair straightened. Recently a few of our clients have been telling us stories of salons mixing relaxers with conditioners in order to get their hair straighter. I'll give two examples.

First example. A client used to get Dominican blowouts. She was short on time and just stuck with a rollerset. She's a solid 4b. When I saw her she had broken pieces at her scalp and her hair was straightish/curlyish and not quite 4 anymore. She said the minute they rinsed the dc out her hair was no longer it's texture. After the rollerset she said her hair just went downhill.

Second example. A clients hair was originally SL. When I met her I assumed she had recently BC'd and still had relaxed ends. She informed me that she's been natural for years and that she's only been getting it pressed. But on the last press her hair was sleeker and shinier than usual. She said her stylist mixed something but she wasn't paying attention and since she didn't smell anything she didn't think anything was up. She did say that she got a 15 minute dc with whatever was mixed. After it was all said and done her hair gradually fell off and she now has only 2 inches of hair. She still has straight ends but I just felt bad cutting it all off.

I could go on but I think you guys get it. If you go to a salon where they complain about the thickness of your hair or things like that don't let them touch your hair. Both of these ladies had thick hair 4 type hair. My guess is that they are just putting it in and not neutralizing afterwards. I can't think of any places that shampoo after a dc.

I don't normally start threads but there was enough people to make me see that something is afoot. Why people would do such a nasty thing is beyond me.

:nono: OP its so true; many stylists care only about how your hair looks when you leave their salon. Couldn't give a @#$% about the long term. This is the most underhanded and dangerous thing I've ever heard...
 
Honestly this is why I'm scared to death the ever step in a salon. In my experience, stylists always looked at my hair as problem hair. I can't imagine going in with a full head of natural 4bz hair, what the reaction would be. Maybe it would be different if one had looser textured type 3 hair. But I almost feel like some stylists are put off by having to do highly textured hair, and take their frustrations out on the client.
 
I read about this situation on LHCF a few years ago. A fashion writer/blogger wrote about this experience at a Dominican salon. The stylist put the relaxer in the conditioner. I think this is happening more often than we think and we blame it on heat damage. Some stylists try to warm people up with language like "loosen it up a bit", "soften", etc. Some may not even give you those warnings. If a stylist complains about your hair and suggests a texturizer or relaxer....run!

ETA: This is really dangerous. What if the client had a scalp condition or an allergy?
 
wow! I can't believe people are actually doing this, and I feel really bad for your clients who had to go through this. For the most part I think there should be some legal action taken against these two salons. Just saying.
Somebody's gotta pay.
 
this is just despicable. how dare anyone do a thing like that! if you don't know/don't want to handle a type of hair then don't do it! Can you imagine going under the dryer/steamer with relaxer in your hair! I probably would have had to go to the hospital because i have a very sensitive scalp & as soon as the relaxer is on it gets washed off because it burns me real bad.
 
Thank you for posting. My last trip to a dominican or any salon I asked the hairdresser if she could do a ACV rinse, you would have thought that I asked for something from my great-great-great grandmamas days they looked at me like I was crazy and said they never heard of an ACV rinse. Needless to say .....I have never been back to any salon. I do my hair, my husbands and my daughters.

Mmhhmm. I'd rather pay that extra $100 or $200 dollars to visit a white salon that caters to all natural hair types. At least I know they won't be using or diluting their products with harsh chemicals just to loosen my napps. :nono:

I knew before I left that salon I would never be back - and it's sad because I recommended several people to her and she is amazing at what she does. It really is underhanded that people would do this without someone knowing about it.
