Sorry if there's a thread regarding this already, but I didn't find it and I had some questions.

Ok, so I've been checking out hair color and I've been itching to color my hair when I remove my weave. I really want something different. Im bored with my color. So online I looked up my friend's hair color and she has changed it often with no real damage. I'll post pics, but I want to ask some of you ladies who are well versed in hair coloring. I wanted to start this thread for the ladies who've been interested in possibly coloring.


-What's a good brand? (if I want to do it myself)
-Should I go to the salon and have it professionally done?
-How much damage do you think I can expect? (if I should)
-What color if not any of these do you think I should try?

My friend has done blonde, which I really like, but I doubt I can pull off. But she also has a reddish brown color that I've been peeping.

she does her color on her own but I'm a little nervous about it, and I want to get insight from you ladies. She has a different texture than I do, and I want to get some info from people who do have a texture closer to mine. Please help.
 
Your friends color looks spectacular. She's very beautiful too.

I think the reddish brown choice would look awesome I think you should do multi-dimensional color with highlights and low-lights. Be very careful though!

Since you said you wanted to hear from someone with a similar texture as you you should post that wet pic of your wavy hair for posters to see because some ladies might not have seen it that way a hair twin can chime in!:yep:

From what I've heard you have to get extra diligent with the moisture protien balance....on your p's and q's for real! lol

The reddish brown color would look so good on you Nichi!

Your friend is really pulling that blonde color off in the 1st pic. It looks really pretty on her.

I have never colored my hair so I can't help. Love you though :yep:
 
Wow, your friend pulls off that color amazingly, and her hair looks like its in good condition! I'm curious about color too, Im eager to hear what others have to share!

Yes, please go to a PROFESSIONAL to lighten your hair, especially if you're relaxed or texturized. Never try to do it on your own, if you don't know what you're doing.

Your friend does a great job on HER hair, but a stylist will be able to tell what will work for YOU. So far, your hair in your avatar is GORGEOUS. I want it to STAY that way.

If there is an Aveda salon by you go to them. Many naturals and relaxed heads seem to be very happy with their color work.

-How much damage do you think I can expect? (if I should) I experienced breakage with highlights from the bleach. From what I've read online and taken from other people's attempts at color highlights are more harsh than a regular dye job. It depends on how many levels you lift the hair. I would just stay on top of moisture and protein and minimize heat use.

-What color if not any of these do you think I should try? I would try a brown
 
OMG I am sooo feeling your friends gradient hair color. I would have never guessed that she colored it herself. It looks professional and very healthy. It looks good straight and curly.

Major mistake for me..So now I am going to have to pay big bucks to get it color corrected..I wouldnt suggest lightening hair on your own- if you do, its a risk. Just dont end up like me...lol
-Should I go to the salon and have it professionally done? Yes you should go to a professional if you are going to lighten your hair
-How much damage do you think I can expect? (if I should) minimal damage if you take care of it
-What color if not any of these do you think I should try? I think the reddish brown would look nice on you. Maybe try highlights if you are nervous about the whole head

I would definitely go to a professional salon for the color if you have never experimented with color previously. :yep:

i need this thread.. i want to color my hair.. BADDDDD.. i was hoping to not have to go to the salon, but i also remember you get what you pay for...

I like to color my hair Nichi and I wish I could do it more often but with relaxed hair, I don't have as much room for error. Coloring is less damaging than relaxing. I would probably have to have natural hair to do all of things I want to do.

During the process of coloring, the amino acid tyrosine is targeted and during that process, you loose water, which is one reason why coloring can be drying. For this reason using a moisturizing conditioner before coloring is important.

Lifting more than two levels at a time gets really tricky and should be done in a salon because you have usually have to tone as you go.

Using semipermanent rinses especially ones like sebastian can help protect your color and your hair cuticle after the process.

With the reddish brown color you have posted, you could maintain the intensity between color visits with rinses as well.

Thanks Jada, I am natural, but perhaps it's best to go to a professional. I always see those at home kits that you can use to get reddish/brown and i figure since it's not super bright, that it wouldn't be a problem. Maybe i should try a rinse first?

I also liked my friend Erin's, she lurks on this board and she may see this thread even, lol. She cut all her hair off and has chosen to wear it short now. She colored it from black to a cute reddish color. Here are two pics.

I hope you guys can see the color in that, it's reddish. She got it professionally done and I'm truly considering it. You guys think I can pull it off considering my texture, facial features, etc?

I want this thread to be a guide of sorts, where we have discourse regarding hair color/rinses, etc I've been meaning to ask for a long time.

wow, thanks sooo much for this, Gymmie. I was actually looking up scientific explanations of hair color as you posted this. I would probably not be wearing my hair straightened, it would probably just be natural with the color.

What do you know about henna for coloring? Would you try it for the colors i'm going for? Do they even make them in reddish brown?

Because you are natural, Henna alone won't give you the same color intensity. Now if you were to get your color lifted one or two levels and then henna, yeah. I used henna a lot when I was growing out highlights and it made them a beautiful auburn color and helped me keep the hair strong so I didn't lose as much length as I was trimming it out of my hair.

You are going to have the same issue if you try to rinse your hair this color on natural hair. They take better to hair that has been chemically processed first. You can try applying rinses to hair that has been clarified and lightly blowdried to help the color penetrate. That has worked for some people.

I love red and auburn hair colors. I dyed mine last summer. They do oxidize quickly, especially in the summer. Red is the hardest color to keep because of the size of the molecule but my favorite so I do it anyway. You could probably get away with just a color protecting leave in, Lanza Color Tramua leave in is just :love:, because you have natural hair in good shape.

If you do want to try it at home, textures and tones is your best IMO. It has the most consistent reviews and some naturals here have used it many times before.

Wow--your friend's hair looks awesome!! Why don't you get her advice about self-coloring? I use to do my own color at home (I wasn't natural then)--and I loved it. I agree with Texture & Tones being a good at-home line.
 
Good lord, your friend does a GREAT job on her hair. :thud: Her hair is the business!!!! I use Aveda color done in the salon by a stylist. It's expensive (like $75), but it works well for me and it gentle on my hair.

Why don't you try highlights in the reddish brown first to see if you like? That way, you minimize damage and you still get a little taste of color. That's what I do...
 
I'm also in love with the color in your friend's hair! I can't believe she did it herself! She is very talented!

I don't have much to add since you've been given great advice & info! I cosign on Textures and Tones(T&T). I used Ruby Rage and used it in September 2009. The front of my hair is still in great shape. I only colored the front and the color is faded now. I haven't had any problems with breakage or dryness. I wash and deep condition every single week. I do a protein treatment once a month. I believe that is why I haven't had any problems.

I just wanted to add that T&T is ammonia free which is a huge plus! I plan to color my hair again with T&T in the spring.

I believe you can have healthy hair and also color. Maintenance is the most important thing in addition to proper use. Follow the instructions and be careful with lifting too much.

I would recommend going to a colorist if you're unsure about what color would compliment your skintone and need to bleach your hair to achieve your desired color.

Check out Napp83's channel. She has beautiful hair and she uses Textures and Tones for color. She has videos on her color and what works for her.

I don't know why, but for some reason, I just hate blonde dye jobs on black women. I don't care if its platinum or honey...just blonde on black people makes me itch. Especially on naturals. I remember on the unpopular opinions thread, when vainjane (sorry, left out all the little symbols) mentioned that some colors will make a natural head look like dead grass, and IMO, blonde is one such color.

I think the only exception is when a person is born with the color. Nature puts everything together just right in such cases.
But when it comes out of a bottle...blech. IMO, it washes out the skin and just drags the entire look down.
Ya'll don't stone me, I'm just giving my opinion. :look:

But I love a nice, rich auburn or brown. The right shade and highlights can really help warm a complexion and enhance the eye color. Your friend Erin's color is sublime. :lick:

And I'm also casting my vote for going to a professional. Too many things can go wrong doing it yourself for the first time, especially when you're lifting out color.

-What's a good brand? (if I want to do it myself) After using pretty much every :censored: brand out there, my suggestion is to stick with the ones geared towards women of color. Hi Rez by soft-sheen carson gave me the red that I had been lusting after for years, but didn't jack up my hair like Feria. Haven't used Texture & Tones, but I've heard good things. For semi permanent, I like Clairol's beautiful collection.

-Should I go to the salon and have it professionally done? If you want something complicated like your friends ombre job, I would. But the reddish brown is pretty simple. It's cheaper to do it at home. It's easy, you just follow the directions which are pretty much, plop it on all your hair or plop it on your roots. Personally, I thought it was a lot simpler then self-relaxing.

-How much damage do you think I can expect? (if I should) Depends. If you're using semi-permanent, it's not going to do anything. With permanent color, as long as you follow the directions, it's not going to hurt you. Of course you're going to want to be nice to your hair and condition it, protein, etc. What got me in trouble was dying my hair a different color every two weeks in high school. Don't do that. That is bad. Well, I would also say the lighter you go, the more babying you're going to have to do.

-What color if not any of these do you think I should try? I always tell people to dye their hair burgundy, regardless if it looks good or not, because I love burgundy. :giggle: I wouldn't do blonde. And jet black will stick to your hair like white on rice. So, if you don't like it, you will damage your hair trying to get rid of it with dye remover. You can always do the wig store thing. You go to a wig store (or anywhere with fake hair) and basically check the color against your skin tone and see if it looks crazy. I wish I had done that before dying my hair red orange. Or blue black.

And don't forget to keep in mind the undertones in your skin. Cool undertones = cool/ash colors. Warm undertones = warm colors. For example, I look better with ash dark ash brown hair than warm chestnut brown hair.

I need to stay out of these threads. I'm getting the hair dye itch again.

I think I will be transitioning this year or "stretching" my relaxers; so I will be coloring again. I want a pretty red or auburn, so I made an appt with Paul Mitchell for tomorrow after school. I'm so excited about the look after all the work is done.

Okay well since this is the color thread what is a good semi permanent. I know they won't show up too much but I am not ready for the commitment of a permanent color.

I don't know if this question matter, but what color are you trying to rinse to? I think with that, members who are more knowledgeable can suggest brands
 
That Blonde is beautiful!! I wanna lighten my hair for spring tho.. I just don't know about the extra maintainence =/ make sure you post pics OP

i'm sorry to disappoint, but in MY experience, semi-permanents are not worth it. They are gentle, true, but they will not show up on natural hair unless you're in the sunlight.
and beware of semi-permanent black-it WILL stick to your hair like glue. :blush:
